‘Sugar Bones is a crowd favourite. It is one of the songs in our regular set that gets the audience dancing and people have even started to sing the lines back to us, before it has even been released. It gives me goose bumps every >me.’ – Cameron Alexander
Cameron Alexander is a new and upcoming indie folk artist from Perth in Western Australia. He released his first single “Six Seasons” in October of last year, which you can listen to on Triple J Unearthed. Cameron is now set to release his second single “Sugar Bones” on 9th of April.
It is a very different sound to his first single “Six Seasons” which was ballad like and melancholy in sound. “Sugar Bones” is an upbeat sounding song with a mix of instruments to delight the senses.
The song features acoustic guitar, cello, bass, drums, with a layer of electric sounds. Add in Cameron’s vocals which are rich and velvety, this indie folk/pop song is catchy and one that you will be singing along to very quickly.

The song starts off with a very short instrumental and jumps into the lyrics almost immediately. The verses sing of those you used to love, while the chorus and singing of “Sugar Bones” is that comparison of who stays around during the tough times. The lyrics “Sugar Bones are sweet, but they melt in the rain” show who is there and who easily disappears in those times.
When the song reaches the chorus the vocal range and instruments pick up, the tempo increases, and the song takes on a more folk rock, almost grunge type sound. In the chorus, cello player Ellen Duhig provides backing vocals, which brings another rich layer to this indie folk song bringing a sweet sound to the songs story.
Cameron has said of the song when they play it live, that it is a crowd favourite and gets everyone dancing. He says people in the crowd even start to sing along and that it gives him goosebumps every time. And it is no wonder why it gets the crowds singing along as it is a very catchy song.
If you are in Western Australia, Cameron Alexander has two upcoming shows. Sunday March 28th at Indian Ocean Hotel and on Saturday 24th of April at Mojo’s Bar. The rest of us will have to wait for our chance for a live show, but in the meantime, be sure to secure yourself the new single so you know what you have to look forward to.
