Despicable is the title of Carcass’ new EP scheduled for release on October 30th. The EP contains 4 quality tracks – these songs are apparently surplus to requirements for the new Carcass album (release date is on hold due to the COVID pandemic). Whilst there can be a preconception or stigma around ‘leftover’ tracks, in this case the point needs to be laboured that this package is by no means weak. In fact, I find this to be a high quality release that hits on a lot of the sweet spots of the band’s diverse sound. It’s been seven years since Carcass last treated fans to new music, so these songs quench a long earned thirst for fan like myself.

The Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue starts with a harmonised guitar salvo that evokes a Heartwork / Necroticism era sonic aesthetic. The mid paced chug of the verse and frenetic pace of some of the other riffs make this a varied but exceptionally enjoyable track.
The Long And Winding Bier Road is a mid-paced chugger in the vein of some of the more hook laden material off later era albums like Swansong. The riff has no right to be heavy, but it works.
Under The Scalpel Blade is a blast beat laden grinder which evokes some old school vibes thanks to the layered vocals from Walker and Steer. This track was released way back in December 2019, so chances are that you’ll have heard this one if you’ve been keeping tabs on the band in recent times.
Slaughtered In Soho closes the release out in a melodic, mid-tempo manner. It’s another solid tune, and closes out the EP well.

The 4 tracks are a smooth listen and if you’re a fan you’ll happily repeat them over and over again. If these are truely the tracks that didn’t make the cut for the new LP there is no doubt that the new Carcass album is going to be a massive success when it is unleashed (which will be presumably once the ability for the band to tour in support of the album returns). Until then we still have a new Carcass release, and it’s a solid one too.
CARCASS is:
Bill Steer – Guitars
Jeff Walker – Bass/Vocals
Daniel Wilding – Drums
Tom Draper – Guitars
