Casey Barnes’ new single Be Mine is a joyous celebration of love. Featured on his new album, The Good Life, his anthemic lyrics are a stirring call to accept love when you’ve been hurt before. The Queensland artist’s recent album debuted at Number 1 on the iTunes Country Charts and Number 2 on the ARIA Country Charts, proving Barnes is a big name in Australian country music. His country rock single, Ain’t Coming Home was released this summer and rose to Number 1 for two weeks on the Country Tracks Top 40 Chart.
Be Mine is more country pop than anything else, but is influenced by a number of genres and does not conform strictly to this genre. For instance, the bridge of the song blends country with a few interesting, almost Celtic moments of string instrumentation.
The track starts with a pulsing beat and enticing synth before Barnes’ croons, “You think that love is gonna let you down.” Barnes played the song to his daughters who loved it, and he says it has already become an instant fan favourite. It isn’t surprising, with lyrics that grow increasingly encouraging throughout the song, in which Barnes attests to the transformative power of true love.
He masters the art of controlling the mood through his vocals, moving from gentle reassurances and an incredibly soothing voice to a celebratory chorus. His voice starts off incredibly soothing and moves to a stirring and powerful finish, utilising the wide range of his vocals that led him to feature on the seventh season of Australian Idol in 2009 and to be a Golden Guitar finalist this year.

The rushing sound just before the chorus signals in the flood of emotions that Barnes expresses in his lyrics. A clicking through the bridge carries the upbeat tone of the song, and a host of different string instruments rather than merely relying on a guitar or banjo to carry the country sound gives the song an authentic, polished feel.
If you like the song, I’d also recommend checking out the video on Barnes’ Youtube channel, linked below. It shows a woman who looking at her phone, looking back on her relationship thus far with the man who is calling her. It is clear from the lyrics she is afraid of the future but it is a cutesy look at a happy couple’s time together. Shots such as her hand running down his arm are artfully filmed, and the video beautifully expresses the slight tentativeness and overruling commitment evident in the lyrics.
Barnes artfully blends country with pop, neither genre dominating in a song that no doubt will be a crowd favourite singalong at his concerts, including the upcoming Gympie Music Muster in August this year. Whether you are a country fan (or country pop fan as it may be) or not, honest and unabashedly emotive in musical and lyrical composition, Be Mine is a heartening celebration of undying love.
