Few artists traverse the boundaries of genre as effortlessly—and hauntingly—as Chelsea Wolfe. With eight albums, a fluid blend of folk, goth, metal, and electronica, and a mystique all her own, Wolfe has carved a unique path through the music world. I had the privilege of catching up with her ahead of her Australia and New Zealand tour this May, and what unfolded was a deep, thoughtful, and at times mystical dive into the mind of a true sonic shapeshifter.

“I started writing when I was nine…”

From the very beginning, Wolfe was surrounded by music. Her father, a local country musician in Sacramento, had a humble home studio where young Chelsea would absorb every sound and eventually start creating her own. Beginning with poetry, she soon turned to songwriting, but it wasn’t until her twenties that she gained the confidence to bring her songs to the stage.

“It’s always been what I wanted to do,” she reflects. “But it took me a while to feel ready.”

A Sonic Evolution, Guided by Intuition

When asked to sum up her 20-year career in 25 words or less, Wolfe laughs and offers a snapshot of artistic metamorphosis: “I’ve released eight albums, explored acoustic, heavy rock, electronic—whatever I feel pulled to in the moment. I follow my intuition.”

Whether it’s the intimate vulnerability of acoustic recordings or the brooding depth of her more metal-infused work, Chelsea Wolfe’s artistry never sits still. Her newest release, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, is no exception—a moody, electronic-laced meditation on transformation, letting go, and rebirth.

The Album: A Cathartic Rebirth

Calling the album a “rebirth in process,” Wolfe dives into themes of healing, detachment, and presence.

“Making this record taught me so much. It’s about being present with the music. Letting it become what it needs to be, not controlling it.”

She credits producer Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio) with helping the songs breathe and transform from heavier demos into more ethereal, emotionally resonant versions. Tracks like “Tunnel Lights”, “Whispers in the Echo Chamber”, and “Dusk” are already becoming live favorites, echoing the album’s fluidity and strength.

“What genre are you?” Wolfe: “Alternative…but I love the goth label.”

For those new to Chelsea Wolfe, trying to slap a genre label on her is a futile task. Gothic folk? Doom metal? Experimental rock?

“I’d say alternative, if I have to choose. But I love the goth label—it can encompass so much.”

Her influences reveal just how expansive her musical DNA is. From the country legends of her youth—Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Dolly Parton—to Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, and the trip-hop textures of Massive Attack, Wolfe’s sound is a rich tapestry woven from seemingly disparate threads.

Looking Back—and Ahead

With 20 years behind her and an ever-evolving creative vision, Wolfe is as ambitious as ever.

“I already have the next three albums in my head,” she confesses, one of which includes a winter solstice-themed record—a haunting, witchy concept that fans will no doubt devour. There’s also a desire to dip further into film scoring, something that’s long felt like a natural extension of her atmospheric work.

Touring Australia (Properly) This Time

In May 2025, Chelsea Wolfe returns to Australia and New Zealand—this time with her full band in tow.

“In 2022, my bandmates got COVID, and I had to rework the whole set solo and acoustic,” she recalls. “This time I’m excited to bring the full experience.”

Fans can expect a dynamic mix of the new record and select favorites from her previous releases. “We’ll play some of the heavier stuff too,” she smiles.

The Witchy Soul Behind the Music

As the conversation turns lighthearted, Wolfe shares more personal insights: Her favorite artist? Townes Van Zandt. The craziest thing she’s done? Becoming blood brothers with Josh Homme (yes, that Josh Homme). A topic she could talk about for hours? “Witchcraft,” she answers without hesitation.

When asked what advice she’d give to emerging artists, Wolfe offers something that resonates deeply:

“The thing you feel is weird or embarrassing about yourself? That’s usually the thing that will make you stand out. Embrace it.”

.

.

Presence Over Perfection

Wolfe’s journey is one of artistic courage—of listening to the quiet voice within, even when it’s drowned out by external expectations. Her music is not simply sound. It’s ritual. It’s reflection. It’s release.

“The best thing about performing live? Seeing the songs evolve night after night,” she says. “Feeling them take on new life.”
