Who’s ready for some old X-Tina vibes?

.

World renowned vocalist that is Christina Aguilera is finally back after six years to mark her triumphant return with her new track Accelerate featuring rappers 2 Chainz and Ty Dolla $ign. The single will spawn as the lead track to her highly anticipated 8th studio album Liberation, which will be released on June 15 2018. For those of you who need a little throwback, Christina rose to fame alongside Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in 1993 on the The Mickey Mouse Club. She then went on to release her first single Genie In A Bottle in 1999, which went on the gain worldwide success at the top of the charts, alongside her first 8x platinum studio album Christina Aguilera as a teenager. She has since gone on to release iconic worldwide smash hits such as Dirrty, Beautiful, Ain’t No Other Man and Candyman. The starlet also featured as the lead in musical film Burlesque alongside Cher, as well as being a judge on television show The Voice.

The intro of this track is as if you’re listening to an African ritual of some kind. Fifteen seconds in, the instrumental completely drops and changes into a hip hop inspired beat, which at first had me to believe that I must have accidentally changed the song because it sounded completely different. Incorporating her smooth R&B elements used throughout her 2002 studio album Stripped, we see Christina re explore these sounds as she uses hip hop influences to recreate that era in her career and modernise it. The rhythm and vision for the track greatly reminds me of her track Not Myself Tonight from 2010 as she also reflects similar attributes from the Bionic era such as low-key electronic tempos. The beat of this track is literally as if Christina had combined several sounds from her past studio albums and mixed them all together into a time machine and fast forward to 2018.

That’s what I need”

The lyrics of this track focus on themes of feminism, sex and lust. Although the lyrical content, especially in the chorus, heavily explores the desired sexual intimacy between Christina and her supposed love interest, the verses back up her power and confidence as a strong women. She uses these sections of the track to make well aware that her girl group are solid with just each others company and that it’s going to take a lot of sexual pleasing from a man to break the feminist bond between them. It’s an interesting concept that Christina has tried to incorporate two strong themes into one fast paced track, however, experience shows she’s bound to succeed in strongly getting her message across. Her vocals stay low throughout the track until we get those iconic Christina runs towards the end, meshing perfectly well with the addition of 2 Chainz and Ty Dolla $ign.

Accelerate feels as if I’m literally listening to an unreleased Christina song from 2003. As she’s always chosen to explore new themes throughout each studio album release, we see a turn back to some past elements. If her past tracks Dirrty, Lady Marmalade and Not Myself Tonight had a baby, Accelerate would be their child; it’s the only way to explain the nostalgic sound of this new release. As we see Christina open back up to her urban roots, it will be interesting to hear this renewed sound for her studio album Liberation in June. With confirmed collaborations such as Demi Lovato, I’m making strong predictions that these new tracks are going to be absolute killers, marking a victorious comeback for the vocalist queen of this pop generation.
