Cosmic Psychos only have one setting. Really fucking loud. Three old blokes who look like they cold be your plumber, your janitor and your old history teacher amble on to the stage in an orderly fashion and then smash you in the fucking face with a sonic sledgehammer. Somehow having your ears bleed feels like a privilege.

The Psychos have been churning out their particular brand of no bullshit yobbo punk in some form or another since sometime around 1977. During the intervening four decades the line up has changed, even the name changed, but the sound has been constant. Really fucking loud.

Their show at the Basement tonight kicked off about 9 after a quick set by young and hopeful melodipunksters The Chats. After becoming acclimatised to the decibel level it becomes clear that, although Ross Knight on bass and vocals is the longest serving member and the glue holding the Psychos together, the engine room of the band’s sound is latest addition John McKeering. An understated sort of bloke, McKeering’s work is the kind of thing only Australian music has been able to produce, like something Pete Wells might have laid down if he’d spent more time in jail.

The audience is pretty good mix of older and younger oz rock fans, mostly blokes who are today going to be feeling as average as the Psychos lyrics suggest. Towards the end of the show they bring out the boys from The Chats, not really to perform with them in any way, just to hang out and drink beer.

Its a hell of a way to spend a night in the Captial’s diviest dive bar. The only downside is the ringing in your ears. Its really fucking loud.
