Cosmo’s Midnight are traversing the globe promoting their latest album, Stop Thinking Start Feeling. Having completed a North American tour, the duo were now on the tail-end of their Aussie leg before heading off to Europe. On stage at the Astor Theatre two things were evident: Cosmo’s Midnight have a chokehold on creating on some of the best electronic pop, but they still have room to grow in their performances.

It feels likes a miracle to get any artist to do shows in WA, having missed out on a bevy of tours it’s brilliant to see brothers Cosmo and Patrick Liney come back to Perth after having last made an appearance in 2019. Their concert within the vintage charm of Astor seemed like an ideal setting but the crowd was smaller than expected.

DJ Charlie Bucket warmed things up with his style of funk, hip hop and disco including remixes featuring Kenny Dope, Jamiroquai and Dimitri from Paris. He rarely misses and it set Cosmo’s Midnight up for a banging set.

Opening with the laid-back groove of “Telephone” it was the perfect introduction to the group’s discography. With a rolling bassline and crisp percussion the duo were joined by a drummer and guitarist rounding out a full band. Cosmo settled in on the left deftly playing bass as Patrick took on vocals that were difficult to hear in the wash of instruments. Tasmanian singer Asta then came out resplendent in Y2K-core with her baby pink wrap-arounds, cropped hoodie and low slung jeans to give a pop-tastic rendition of Kylie Minogue’s “On A Night Like This”.

Dipping into album Yesteryear “Unwind” was next, followed by “Walk with Me”. Musically, Cosmo’s Midnight delivered what we wanted to hear. It sounded so morish that it was impossible not to be swept up by the good vibes radiating amongst fans who happily sung along. “Bang My Line” switched the tempo up and like all other songs the tracks retained their crisp production quality. The brother’s knack for blending electronic elements with live instrumentation was on full display, with Patrick’s keyboard skills and Cosmo’s bassline providing a dynamic backdrop to their lush, layered sound.

The pace was cracking having managed to burn through ten songs in half an hour. “Can’t Do Without” is the perfect summer jam for the middle of winter and “Yesteryear” popped off with its catchy melody and house rhythm delivered like warmed honey. All the elements were there however seeing Asta join the band again for “Have It All” and standout Moloko’s “Sing It Back” showed there might be more work to be done. Her confidence in working the audience was missed when she wasn’t out front.

As a frontman Patrick, aside from the obligatory shoutouts, lacked a sense of playfulness and spontaneity that their songs evoke. In “Borrowed Time” recorded vocals played as the band took their positions but without a focal point and basic lighting the song felt a little adrift. Incorporating more dynamic lighting or visuals would’ve elevated the show, making it as visually captivating as it was sonically. For a small venue, these things are less noticeable yet on the Astor stage it felt like a missed opportunity.

Finishing with “C.U.D.I – Can U Dig It,” fans were bouncing and singing along. Despite the set being on the shorter side, it was met with enthusiastic cheers from a crowd that clearly relished every beat.

Overall it was a solid outing showcasing their stellar musicality as one of Australia’s favourite electronic dance artists. With a bit more flair, Cosmo’s Midnight have the guts to match the outside with the inside to transform a great concert into an unforgettable experience.
