“KILLER UNDER A BLOOD MOON”
Reviewer – Chantelle Angileri
Think back to Dan Sultans ARIA Award nominated album Killer and just reminisce on the talent Sultan showed his fans throughout that entire album. Just when you thought it had reached its peak with its mix of blues and gospel sounds Sultan has outdone himself by re-creating a selection of tracks for his new EP Killer Under A Blood Moon. 2017 released album Killer has been revamped with the help of some of the biggest names in Australian music: A.B. Original, Camp Cope, Meg Mac, and Gang of Youths lead man Dave Le’aupepe.
Listening to each of these tracks, you can tell that the aim wasn’t to start from scratch but was to provide each song with a new idea, a new perspective and a bit of a boost. Throughout this entire new EP, the Melbourne based singer/songwriter shows just how diverse and creative he is musically. Drover featuring Dave Le’aupepe begins with a snare drum beat only this time, the intro is a little less funk and a little more sultry rock. Even though the lyrics are just as the original the entire sound has livened up and been given touches to elevate the sound and talent behind it. The refreshed version of the single Killer featuring Camp Cope is another example of how new ideas can really shine. Moving away from pop and synthesised beats to a deeper, raw guitar rhythm, once again showing how the collaboration of Australian talent can create and recreate music to our ears. The EP finishes off with two bonus track Coming Back and Pitchfork, which are snip its from Killer and have just been given a new identity.
Dan Sultan made it clear that each of these artists came together to collaborate, experiment and to just have a great time, which is clear throughout this EP. If you’re a true Sultan fan, you won’t want to miss out on this one.
