Earlier this year, Dead Letter Circus dropped The Armour You Own’, the first official taste of Album number five, set for release later this year. They have been touring across the country over the month of May and June. On the WA leg of their tour, they stopped by the legendary Mojo’s Bar, an intimate 250 capacity venue located in Fremantle. At the tail end of the tour, and with a public holiday just around the corner, things were bound to get loose!

It started with The Glorious Sons. The crowd were certainly not prepared for the ferocious onslaught that the Canadian boys unleashed on the Australian audience on their first visit to the country. They certainly left an impression. The ‘Spirit of blues’ clearly took over the boys bodies as they thrashed around the stage. Particularly lead vocalist, Brett Emmons, who at times looked like he was being electrocuted as he viciously pointed at members of the crowd. As one Facebook user so eloquently put it: “On a scale of 1 to Jim Morrison, how fucked off your face were you tonight? God damn.”
Under the influence or not, it did not detract from the powerful, soulful vocals that lent so perfectly to the well-executed bluesy, southern rock tunes reminiscent of early Kings of Leon.

Dead Letter Circus wasted no time diving, full throttle, in to the set with Here We Divide, getting the crowd jumping from the get go.  It was a high energy start and the energy level in the room never really wavered from there.

“Can we please get a round of the venue’s finest Whiskey?” lead vocalist Kim Benzie requested very early in the set. Be careful what you wish for, you might just get more than you bargained for! Not long after a fan offered up a shot to Benzie, a “Good looking guy in glasses” appeared with a tray  filled with one shot for each member of the band. “Can I get mine back then!?” The fan half-joked. “No refunds! We’ll get you a shirt instead, they cost about as much as a drink does in Perth these days anyway!” Benzie jested. The “Good looking guy in glasses” appeared five more times throughout the night. “Enough! You win!” Benzie finally conceded.

The DLC boy’s kept the crowd engaged with their enthusiastic performance Classic material such as One Step, The Mile and Lines continue to elicit the biggest reactions. “I’m not sure we are supposed to tell you… But we have a new album coming out August 24” Benzie laughed before launching into Running Out Of Time. The song features signature DLC soaring melodies and beautiful atmospheric guitar tones over heavily percussive, driving rhythms. There is definitely a lot to look forward to in the coming months!

“We’re still undecided about how to go about the next section of the show, so we’re going to do a live poll”  Benzie announced before asking the audience whether or not they wanted the traditional encore rigmarole., which seems to have become the norm at live shows. Opinions were divided, so a happy medium of bassist, Stu, hilariously leading the band through  impromptu band jam occurred before closing the night with a bang! Literally, all hands on deck required for drumming to This is The Warning!
