For the very first time, English alternative-rockers Deaf Havana touched down in Australia for their first ever Australian headline tour, dropping by chilly Perth to rip up the stage of Amplifier on the night of Tuesday 20th of August. Under the eerie glow of red and blue stage lights, Perth-based support acts Triggerlip and SHANGRILA perfectly set the scene for a night of rock and pop-punk.
Like nothing I’ve witnessed before, a tight-knit community of ripped-jean, checkered-Vans wearing bodies drew closer to the stage. Tonight would see Deaf Havana perform an intimate show for a small quantity, further protecting their indie nature.

Whilst waiting for the band to arrive, I noticed a man and his wife had approached my best friend. Eavesdropping, I learnt that the man was quite possibly Deaf Havana’s biggest fan, having travelled to every gig far and wide just to see them. How he achieved this, I have no idea but maybe we could all aspire to be like him. Like the rest of us, the four English boys strolled onto the stage clad in oversized shirts, ripped jeans and neck tattoos with jet-lagged, yet large grins.
“Hello, we’re Deaf Havana and we’re from England,”
Lead singer James Veck-Gilodi addressed the cheering crowd before blasting a jet-fuelled ‘Boston Square‘ through the speakers. Throughout the night, a polite James would explain that the band had spent more time on planes than on the ground and would rip into his brother, lead guitarist Matthew and the overly enthusiastic Australian man in the crowd for some quality on-stage banter. Of the enthusiastic fan, Matthew laughed,
“Hey, I paid this guy 20 quid just to pretend like we have fans!”
Perhaps the most amusing thing about the night was when James and Matthew discussed their last visit to Perth. On the fateful Monday night of 4th September 2017, Deaf Havana were due to support Placebo on their 20th anniversary tour at RAC Arena. It was also the night my best friend and I intended on stalking Deaf Havana through our busy streets with the objective of obtaining a photo.
“Well the lead singer (of Placebo) couldn’t handle his drink, he got sick and we had to cancel just as people were queuing.”
By 10.30pm, Deaf Havana were ready to wrap up their set with end track ‘Sinner’, a mind-blowing piece that called for all members of the audience to engage with. Hands shot up into the air under the blue light and smoke machines and collided hard to every beat.

For an intimate and personal glance at an alternative-rock band from England, Deaf Havana are not to be missed as they travel all around Australia in their first headline tour.
