Popular Australian indie-rock band, DMA’s kicked off their Australian ‘The Glow’ tour in Adelaide last night at the iconic Thebarton Theatre, their first headline tour in over two years. This tour celebrates the release of their 3rd studio album, ‘The Glow’, released in 2020. They are finally getting a chance to perform this new album for their avid fans.

The night kicked off with new two-piece Adelaide outfit ‘Wedding Motel’, the brainchild of Bad//Dreams lead singer Benjamin Marwe. I went to this show with no prior knowledge of the support act, but quickly recognised Marwe by his distinctive vocals & jerky stage movements. He paced the stage constantly during the short set, adding to the slightly unsettling feel of the music. This new look featured monologue vocals with an edgy punkish sound. Backing vocalist Kate was more a presence on stage, rather than a feature of the band. I continually felt that this new sound was a parody of some kind, taking the piss so to speak.

The crowd streamed in just before DMA’s took to the stage, filling the floor of the auditorium. This was the first non-seated show I had attended at Thebarton Theatre since Covid and it was so good to see everyone enjoying music as we used to with ‘singing AND dancing’! DMA’s opened their set with the first song on their new album ‘Never Before’, which the crowd clearly knew by heart. They performed nearly all the 11 songs from ‘The Glow’, interspersed with old favourites from their previous albums. Their dreamy vocals, classic guitar poses and very singable songs highlighted the fact that we were all hanging out for a good dose of DMA’s. The crowd sang along to every song, especially crowd favourites ‘Delete’ (their first single and still one of their most popular songs) and ‘Believe’, their Like A Version Cher cover. The lads were supported by a strong 3-piece backing band of drums, Keys/guitar and bass guitar.

.

Toward the end of their set they let loose with a Psychedelic ending to ‘Play It Out’, with flashing strobes and Pink Floyd-like distortion. After performing a 13 song set, they were lured back on stage to perform three encore songs, giving fans a full experience. DMA’s were much more energetic on stage during their encore, really giving their all during ‘Laydown’, and demonstrating how much fun they were having too.
