With a sold out crowd bunched into the main room of The Gov, on the wintry night that was last Friday (4th May), Australia’s own party thrashers, DZ Deathrays brought The Bloody Lovely Tour to Adelaide. With a fierce mosh pit and a set of over an hour’s worth of tracks, the Brisbane bred duo celebrated the release of their new album, Bloody Lovely, in typical DZ Deathrays party style, with a show bursting full of energy, haze effects, and a crowd who weren’t slowing down either.

Along for the ride on this tour were up coming fellow Aussies, Clowns, These New South Whales, and Boat Show. After these guys had warmed up the rowdy Adelaide crowd, they were more than ready for the DZ Deathrays lads. Taking to the stage and opening with Less Out of Sync, DZ were welcomed by a packed-out crowd filled with beer and ready for the effervescent set that immediately kicked into gear. As soon as the track started, the energy in the room exploded with the mosh hitting full force by the end of the opening track.

The mateship shown on stage between vocalist/guitarist Shane Parsons, drummer Simon Ridley, and touring guitarist Lachlan Ewbank lit up the stage, and spoke wonders about their connection as a band. This easily transferred into an infectious energy that spread throughout the venue, and only grew as the night went on. Despite The Gov warning anyone who took part in any behaviour associated with moshing (including crowd surfing) would be kicked out of the venue, no one on the main floor seemed to care, testing the limits by thrashing themselves into each other nonetheless.

Before moving into Guillotine, Shane geared everyone up with a welcoming, “Are you feeling good Adelaide?” After which, the crowd began to move in sync with the infectious riffs of Witchcraft Pt II, during the opening of this track in particular, everyone could be heard chanting along to the rapid and distinctive guitar riff, along with clapping and jumping to the beat. Reflective Skull. Back & Forth, and Get Over It were then powered through, all before the liveliest and final chunk of the night. Tracks such as Total Meltdown, and Like People reopened the pit and gave the ferocious crowd a new form of energy. Gina Works at Hearts followed close by, complete with the crowd passionately challenging Shane’s vocal volume.

So far, the DZ Deathrays hasn’t failed to put on a good show; killing it with a high-powered set list, dexterous guitar work, and swift drumming, and when all combined, make it easy to see why they continue to sell out venues across the country. If you have the chance to see them live, especially on this tour, go ahead, you won’t be disappointed.
