In her debut single, “10 Years” Australian singer-songwriter Emma Burt takes listeners on an introspective journey through the complexities of lingering heartache and the passage of time.

You can hear the tapestry of those country, folk and pop songwriters come through in her first single. It’s a reflective pop ballad that is both personal and relatable. The song grapples with the notion of whether time really does heal all wounds or if the sting will alway remain as a scab.

Opening with the twang of a guitar and the first lyrics “Are you happy now” the lyric driven verses have a catchy hook and sing-a-long rhythm. Blending pop and country seamlessly Emma crafts a song that sounds both familiar but uniquely hers with her flinty vocals. It feels like a deeply personal painting of a vivid picture and it’s brave of such a new artist to go deep into those themes.

The arrangement also has some dynamic highpoints with Emma switching up the tempo throughout the song and introducing instruments like violins into the bridge and airy keyboards which gives “10 Years” a luscious full sound. The production does sound restrained and perhaps a little too crisp, the song could be even more nuanced if there was a little more depth to the delivery.

But overall, “10 Years” has a lot going for it. It’s a promising start for Emma. It’s relatable themes will strike a chord with music listeners who have experienced a heartache that lingers. Burt’s passion for storytelling is evident and it will be exciting to see how she continues to grow and evolve as a songwriter. Here’s to a the start of an exciting musical journey.
