Fifth Dawn’s new single “Return” is a watershed for the alt-rock band and has weathered several changes in the last few years with band member changes, COVID restrictions and an evolving sound. With “Return” the three-piece roar back with a clear voice and song that is deeply personal.
The story of “Return” delves into the impact suicide can have on those left behind when it leaves very little opportunity for closure. This is something that hits close to home for lyricist and vocalist Samantha Faul whose brother committed suicide at seventeen when Samantha was just thirteen. “Return” touches on a recurring dream that Samantha would have. The heart of that dream was about the futile desire to change the past. In “Return” Fifth Dawn has taken that pain and confusion to produce a song that feels like it’s wrestling in a life or death struggle. The alt-rock song is a bold and larger than life outing that refuses to be confined by its grief. The guitars are melodic and brash rising with the barrage of drums with the result being a sonic wall of sound.

With Samantha’s soaring voice and the mythical vibe of production, it’s an epic song that rises like a phoenix and presents as alt-rock music for alt-rock fans who want to be transported to another world. The assured playing on “Return” belies the challenges the band has been through in the last few years. If anything “Return” may mark a new chapter for the band which has steadily been consolidating its loyal fanbase whilst capturing the interest of new fans who are looking for more emotionally driven rock music.
From a tragic devastating event Fifth Dawn has crafted a song that shows that it is possible to move on and ultimately claim our power back in a glorious way.
