Pirate Life Brewery opened its doors at the weekend for the third instalment of their Froth and Fury Festival. It was a perfect day to enjoy a solid serving of heavy metal, rock, punk and alternative music in the Adelaide spring sunshine all washed down with an accompaniment of the brewery’s fine ales.

Incredibly this year’s festival crammed 36 bands into 3 stages set up in the closed off streets behind the brewery. With such a number of bands playing and the inevitable clash of set times it meant that it was impossible to see them all but the stages were close enough together that I was able to make a pretty good fist of it and got to see as many as I could.

There were a number of big international bands on the line-up including Sweden’s The Halo Effect and Suicidal Tendencies from the USA as well as established national acts like Brisbane’s The Butterfly Effect.

Whilst these may have been the draw card for a lot of the punters it was also great to see so many lesser known local, interstate and NZ bands being represented throughout the day across all of the stages. A number of bands were making repeat appearances at Froth such as Hidden Intent, Stabitha and the Knifey Wifeys, Cull the Band and Freedom of Fear amongst others.  It is a great opportunity to see some of these smaller bands in a big venue in front of a large crowd and really appreciate the sound they put out and how good they are.

Whatever you might think about the genre of heavy music one thing is for sure and that is that fans are very supportive. If you put it on, they will come out to watch and enjoy.  Froth is filling a hole in the music festival scene that has been there since the national touring Soundwave folded some years ago.  Adelaide metal heads responded and Saturday was a sell-out, 4000 strong. It made for a great atmosphere. A sea of denim jeans, black t-shirts featuring the spectrum of heavy music punctuated with a sizeable sparkling of coloured hair, facial piercings and, of course, tattoos.  Beers were drunk, heads were banged, vocals shouted back at the bands and devil’s horn rock salutes given as the music pumped out all day.

A great feature of the festival was that the bands were often present at their own merch stalls and fans certainly appreciating the opportunity to meet and chat with the artists. Another interesting feature was on site tattoo in case you wanted a permanent inked reminder of the day or a new buddy tattoo.

I would need a book to write about all the great performances so I’ll just stick to my personal pick of stand outs.

Brisbane’s Lagerstein describe themselves as the world’s best party pirates and they certainly lived up to that billing. It is surely impossible for anyone, regardless of their musical taste, to watch Lagerstein and not have the biggest smile on your face. What a fun set of catchy tunes they played and the crowd interaction was great. The number of fans queueing up to do a beer shoey with the band was a sight to behold. They closed out their set with a version of Men at Work’s Land Downunder which could have been cheesy but they made it pirate rock!

Mannequin Death Squad from Melbourne were my surprise find of the day. I’d heard that they had been supporting Suicidal Tendencies on their national dates so I thought that they would be worth checking out and they were! A two-piece, trashy power pop duo with a bass loop to beef up the sound. A boy girl combo who could swap positions on the guitar and drums and mix up the vocals. They tore it up!  I you missed them, then you missed a treat.

My regret of the day was missing out on NZ’s three-piece metal band Alien Weaponry. I only caught their last song and it has left me wanting more as they sounded great and the crowd were going off.

Suicidal Tendencies were immense. What an experience it is to be close up to the stage and see them in action. Bass duties are being performed by Tye Trujillo filling the role that his father, now with Metallica, performed in the 1990s! There may be over 40 years between Tye and vocalist Mike Muir but Mike’s energy levels make the age gap look as nothing. That guy doesn’t stop still for a minute as he covered every inch of the stage and finished the set in the crowd as they closed out with Institutionalized.

The Butterfly Effect had the tough job of following Suicidal Tendencies and closing out the night on the Froth stage and they kept the crowd going with a top set whilst over on the Fury stage The Halo Effect put on another one of the best sets of the day.  I was glad I made the effort to switch stages because I wouldn’t have wanted to miss that performance of melodic death metal power.

Froth and Fury gets better and bigger every year and has surely turned into one of the best festivals in the country. Roll on next year, it’s a pirate life me!
