Project Description
There aren’t many things that will prompt me to leave my warm home on a cold Winter night, but the promise of a great live show is one of them, so I headed off to Sydney’s Newtown, to catch party band Furnace and the Fundamentals playing their Furnapalooza show at the Enmore Theatre.
.
.
The night was kicked off with a lively set by Sydney indie rocker Pluto Jonze. The venue hadnt filled yet, but those that were there danced and cheered through the set with great enthusiasm. Pluto Jonze was followed by Daft Punk cover band Discovery, who came on stage wearing black suits, black gloves, and black helmets. They livened the crowd up even more, and by the time they had finished their set, the venue was near to full.
.
.
After a brief set break, the imminent arrival of the headline act was heralded by the band members depicted on a video screen, all in various stages of preparation for the show. The crowd joined in with the on-screen countdown, then the six piece band, led by frontman Elliot Crane (aka Furnace), took to the stage to huge cheers and applause from the audience.
.
.
Furnace and the Fundamentals launched straight into their show, starting off with Ricky Martin’s Cup of Life. Playing hits from Spice Girls to AC/DC, Backstreet Boys to Lorde, Furnapalooza is a non-stop, high energy, super fun extravaganza. To call them a covers band seriously underplays their act, with fantastic music and spectacular lighting ensuring there was never a dull moment in the hour and a half long set, which even included Furnace himself crowd surfing on a giant pink swan around the dance floor. The Fundamentals‘ boundless energy was matched by the exuberance of the audience, dancing and cheering and singing along the entire night. It was impossible not to have a great time, and I will definitely be catching their show next time it comes to town.
