Future Usurper, Crypt Crawler’s sophomore album, overall is a depiction of a dystopian future referencing the horrors of the real world, with a specific focus around topics such as the loss of free will and the controlling of humanity. There are also occasional lines throughout the album that reference past songs of ours or even other songs on this album, creating a continuity in the lyrics.

.

.

The Mouth of Death
This opening track of the album explores the concept of people who have nothing better to do than think they are above others or judge and talk about others until they themselves are in the eye of judgement.

Future Usurper
The title track and first single reflects a dystopian world where leaders control civilisation to the absolute extreme, having full power and supremacy over their people. This song was written in observation of how people can fall sheep to advertising and social media campaigns, and how easy it would be in future to rewire human thoughts and emotions into believing anything.

Force Fed to the Dead
These lyrics reflect how humanity can be force fed ideas and beliefs by the media/people in power and be under a horde mentality. Metaphorically, humans are ‘the dead’ as they are being force fed by whomever it may be.

Delirium
Delirium discusses the possibility that we may already be damned, that our leaders have failed us and poses this as potential reasoning why more actions aren’t being taken to save this earth. Furthermore, lyrical descriptions of a decaying human body acts as a metaphor for the earth and the damage being done.

.

.

Inherent Complexion
This track was written in observation of the far wing extremities that are seemingly being adopted, and the complete division and segregation that this can cause. Sometimes it takes being empathetic and seeing all perspectives to be able to truly understand and make informed decisions and choices rather than blindly spreading hate.

The Choir of Reprieve
The lyrics of Choir of Reprieve were inspired after a concert experience. I was watching Max and Igor Cavalera performing songs from ‘Arise’ and ‘Beneath the Remains,’ and I remember seeing people absolutely losing their minds, almost to the point of being possessed. I started writing about a choir or ensemble having the ability to possess their audience, which slowly morphed and progressed into the idea of an extreme fundamentalist cult promising to cleanse a person’s sins in exchange for their submission and compliance by the music played.

The Avaricious Ones
Written in retaliation to a number of experiences and people who abused their positions of power, or their ‘perceived power’ and took advantage of a situation just because they thought they could.

.

.

Horrors of Humanity
This song discusses a few heavy topics, most notably parents who have damaged their child’s life due to drinking or drug abuse. I know a beautiful young girl with foetal alcohol syndrome and it honestly breaks my heart that another human would be so irresponsible to bring life into this world in such an unfortunate way. Other topics include the mistreatment of animals and this world as a whole.

The Illusion We’re Under
Inspired by the ‘Love, Death + Robots’ episode ‘Beyond the Aquila Rift,’ which was based on the short story of the same name by Alastair Reynolds. This track reflects on the idea that we may just be a small part of this existence we find ourselves in, and that there may very well be something much larger than us or that this reality may be something completely different than what we know. Who actually knows the grander details of what life is? Pondering these questions, before ending in a similar fashion to the ‘Beyond the Aquila Rift’ episode, which reveals a much more sinister and dystopian reality than meets the eye.

Once Shadow, Now Flesh
A sequel to a track from our first album ‘Soul Harvester,’ both inspired by the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things.’ This continues the story of the large shadow in the sky slowly wiping away humanity, however now using the metaphor of humanity being possessed and all flesh becoming one to reflect the dystopian themes of control from the rest of the album. Additionally, the opening lyrics of the first track on our debut album ‘To the Grave’ began with words spoken in Italian, with this song (the final track) ending with words in Italian.

CRYPT CRAWLER
release their scorching
sophomore album
‘FUTURE USURPER’

Perth death metal act Crypt Crawler has just released their second album entitled ‘Future Usurper’. This mammoth release is an excellent example of the quality of heavy music being created in our country’s west, with ten brutal tracks feeding off old school styles like Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower and more, while bringing in their own blend of modern elements, progressions and raw bite. This fully self-produced release showcases Crypt Crawler at their very best, with this album proving that they have pushed their craft even further than their debut release ‘To The Grave’. Future Usurper hits hard, bringing their dynamic blend of dark, heavy old school death while pushing the songwriting into new realms. They introduce some slightly progressive elements, yet never lose touch with the old school death metal sound they have become known for.

The lyrical content on Crypt Crawler’s debut album ‘To The Grave’ and the following EP ‘Blood Sustenance’ were typically based on horror movies or several films combined to create original storylines. With this latest release, ‘Future Usurper,’ we see a growth from the band not just in their musicality and production, but also in their lyrical themes, reflecting on the horrors of the real world and humanity as a whole. The track above, ‘Delirium’, dives into the possibility that we may already be damned, that our leaders have failed us and poses this as potential reasoning why more actions aren’t being taken to save this earth. Furthermore, lyrical descriptions of a decaying human body acts as a metaphor for the earth and the damage being done. As a whole, the album embarks on additional themes that include the loss of free will, the abuse of power, existentialism and general human interaction/perception. It brilliantly traverses the issues that we as a human race experience, while sonically drawing you in to listen to everything that this dark, heavy music encapsulates.

Crypt Crawler’s ‘Future Usurper’ is a damn fine slice of old school metal being created in modern times and they are definitely a band to be paying attention to. Crypt Crawler will be hosting their album launch show on June 19th at Lucy’s Love Shack in Perth with more plans on Australian touring once restrictions make it easier for a band from the west.
