New talent alert! Georgia Jones, a singer-songwriter hailing from Byron Bay releases her new debut single “Ruins” and it’s a stunner. The young artist delivers a song that lays bare the heartache and struggles of moving on from the rosy expectations of youth to discover the harsh realities of growing up.
Georgia might be a new artist on the Australian music scene but her whole life has revolved around music. First taking up piano as a child before moving on in her teens to write her own songs, her passion for music-making has fuelled a furnace within and that fire radiates out in “Ruins”. It’s a dark-pop meditation on the disappointments of expectations and the ensuing fear that creeps up from behind about a person’s validity in a world that is obsessed with image and youth.

Letting her voice take centre stage, Georgia rips shreds off herself. Her vocals drip with pathos as she muses to herself and sings “I’m just so fucking sick of it. Had the whole world clenched inside my fist. Come to find that dreams are full of shit. And I’m just revelling in the ruins of it”. It’s as raw as it can get yet there is also a sense of hope that emanates from the production. Airy synths and pianos envelope Georgia’s warm vocals like a protective blanket. The steady beat and drums slowly build the tension conveying a grandness to the concept of “Ruins”. Like other contemporaries like Imogen Heap or BROODS there is a feminine strength coursing through “Ruins”. No surprise then she cites Taylor Swift, Lorde and Billie Eilish as creative inspirations.
When some artists may aim to debut with a lot of grandeur, Georgia Jones has gone the more complex route of presenting a darker exposed perspective that pays off. With “Ruins” she formidably lets us know that she’s here to delve deep into the issues that are harder to face.
