My introduction to Ginger Root was recent. With their growing social media traction, particularly with tracks like “Le Chateau”, a late-night internet rabbit hole led me to their captivating blend of city pop, soul, and indie sensibilities. Going in with limited knowledge, but a deep-seated love for the shimmering sounds of 80s Japanese city pop, I was undeniably curious. As I walked into Northcote Theatre, hearing the pre-show playlist, a delightful selection of classic 80s canto-pop and Japanese city pop, I knew it was a testament to their carefully curated aesthetic.

To kick start the night, KESMAR, project by songwriter and producer Nathan Hawes, put on an opening with a soothing blend of vocals and acoustic guitar. Julian Munyard’s accompanying guitar and vocals added depth, creating an intimate, warm atmosphere. Their harmonies intertwined beautifully, showcasing new, freshly-written tracks alongside a delicate “500 Miles” cover.

The crowd, a surprisingly loud and energetic bunch, was already buzzing. Ginger Root launched into their set, immediately showcasing the groovy, funky basslines and mesmerizing retro synths that define their sound. The visual spectacle that accompanied the music was equally captivating: nostalgic, retro-Japanese anime visuals projected onto the backdrop, perfectly complementing the band’s sonic landscape. The iconic on-stage cameraman, capturing close-up shots of the band members, added another layer of visual engagement, the footage displayed in real-time on the stage’s backdrop, drawing the audience further into their world.

Cameron Lew, the mastermind behind Ginger Root, proved to be a charismatic and engaging frontman. He effortlessly interacted with the audience, sharing anecdotes and responding to their enthusiastic shouts. A spontaneous Q&A session, punctuated by Lew handing his water bottle to a fan who requested it, highlighted his genuine connection with the crowd. The sing-alongs were a testament to the band’s infectious energy, the room vibrating with a collective, giddy-up enthusiasm.

Lew’s banter, particularly his playful teasing about the Australian accent, added a personal touch, making the show feel intimate despite the venue’s size. The inclusion of a full Japanese song, “Kaze,” showcased the band’s dedication to their city pop influences, while a short cover of “Sweet Home Alabama” injected a dose of unexpected, yet undeniably enjoyable, rock and roll.

The crowd’s loudest cheers were reserved for fan-favourite “Loretta,” its infectious melody and relatable lyrics igniting a wave of collective joy. “Show 10,” Lew’s personal favorite from the album Shinbangumi, delivered a moment of introspective beauty, its delicate arrangement showcasing the band’s musical depth. The band members’ playful interactions with the on-stage camera added another layer of entertainment, culminating in a powerful rock and roll solo that left the audience breathless.

As the set drew to a close, the crowd’s chants for an encore were deafening. Ginger Root returned to the stage, launching into a surprising and energetic cover of “Seven Nation Army,” transforming the indie-pop vibe into a stadium-worthy rock anthem. The final song, “Weather,” provided a fitting conclusion, its smooth groove leaving a lingering sense of warmth and nostalgia.

It was such a pleasure to witness the final show of the Ginger Root: Shinbangumi Tour. For someone who had only recently discovered Ginger Root, the live experience was a blend of retro aesthetics with modern sensibilities. The band’s musicianship, Lew’s charismatic stage presence, and the captivating visuals created a truly immersive experience. Ginger Root is an act that deserves to be seen live, their unique blend of sounds and visuals creating a world that is both familiar and refreshingly new. They have successfully crafted a sonic and visual experience that leaves an impression, making them a must-see for anyone who appreciates a touch of retro-futuristic charm.
