“girl in red: mosh pits, pride flags and bumping into ex-girlfriends”

The first time I heard of girl in red, I was scrolling on YouTube back in 2018 and came across a young girl holding a guitar, singing, “I need to be alone” in her bedroom. Fast forward, “we fell in love in October” came out (as did I), and every queer person on TikTok went wild. If you were single during this time, or still are (sorry), seeing queer couples use her song to showcase their relationship either made you very happy or wishing you had someone who loved you.

Moving forward, Ulven went on to win three Norwegian Grammys, secure a deal with Columbia Records, and open for multiple shows during the US leg of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour. Safe to say, she wasn’t our secret anymore.

girl in red is Marie Ulven, a Norwegian singer who is an icon in the LGBTQIA+ community. With her latest album, I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!, she hit down under and performed at The Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane last Sunday night. I was amongst a very young crowd, who waved pride flags, wore suits, and buzzed with excitement.

Around 9pm, the lights dimmed and Ulven graced the stage adorning an oversized suit and tie. The show kicked off with “DOING IT AGAIN BABY,” and fans sang along to every word.

The second song was an energetic performance of “bad idea!” which had a catchy rhythm and relatable lyrics. “Girls” was next and it really amped up the crowd. With its infectious beat and candid exploration of love and attraction, it made everyone feel the charm of pretty girls in their button-up shirts.

“New Love” brought a tender moment to the set. Ulven’s voice was emotive, and the crowd swayed to the dreamy melody. It was a beautiful rendition that showcased her vocal range and emotional depth. “Body and Mind” created an intimate atmosphere, drawing everyone in with its hauntingly beautiful sound.

Despite technical difficulties and needing to restart twice, Ulven handled “I’m Back” with grace and humour. The crowd was supportive, cheering her on as she powered through. The song’s message of resilience and self-acceptance resonated deeply. “Ugly Side” showcased Ulven’s raw honesty, with powerful lyrics and intense delivery leaving a lasting impact.

“October Passed Me By” was a nostalgic trip for many fans. The reflective lyrics and soothing melody made for a poignant performance, with fans reminiscing about past loves and experiences. “We fell in love in October,” a fan favourite, had the entire venue singing along. The song’s romantic and hopeful vibe created a unifying moment for everyone present.

The intensity of “Phantom Pain” was undeniable. Ulven’s powerful vocals and the song’s driving beat made for a thrilling performance, keeping the energy high. She took it up a notch with “You Stupid Bitch,” crowd surfing during the track. She’s got a rebellious spirit, and the crowd loved every second of it.

“Serotonin” was a highlight of the night, with its upbeat tempo and introspective lyrics striking a chord with the audience. “Too Much,” with its acoustic intro, was a heartfelt performance that showcased Ulven’s vulnerability. By fan request, Ulven played the intro and chorus of “hornylovesickmess” on piano, adding a unique touch to the song. The intimate rendition was a special treat for the audience.

“A Night To Remember” lived up to its title, delivering a memorable performance. The upbeat and nostalgic tune had everyone dancing and enjoying the moment. “Midnight Love” was another standout, captivating the audience with its soulful melody.

The hauntingly beautiful “Rue” was a show-stopper, while “Dead Girl in the Pool.” brought a darker, more intense energy to the set. The raw emotion in “You Need Me Now?” was palpable, and “I’ll Call You Mine,” with an acoustic intro and chorus played on guitar by fan request, was a special moment.

Ending the night on a high note, “I Wanna be your Girlfriend” had the entire venue hyped. Who knows, maybe someone ended the night walking away with a girlfriend?
