In a world where strong women figures are starting to finally get the recognition they deserve, girl in red has been one of those trailblazing artists that have opened the door. This indie-pop solo project by Norwegian musician Marie Ulven has wowed audiences around the world with her previous releases and with the release of the album if i could make it go quiet, girl in red is doing it all again.

Kicking straight into the album with the track ‘Serotonin’, girl in red seamlessly blends the raw and almost dark lyrical content with a fun pop sound. This creates a melancholy feel that is almost cathartic. Who doesn’t like to sing along to lyrics that are deep but have fun while doing so? As the first track ends with a darker transition, ‘Did You Come?’ is the next track and it hits a different note. While it still has the same indie pop/rock feel that girl in red captures so well, it is a cheeky call out.

Without spoiling the album, there are so many tracks worthy of mention but not enough space to write about them all. What can be said is that girl in red does a wonderful job of making difficult emotions easier to relate to. Palatable is not the right word, but lyrically this album is frank, vulnerable, emotional and raw – without falling into the trap of feeling inaccessible and dark. Covering a spectrum of issues of love, sex, mental health and all of the feelings that come with existing in the world honestly.

Bouncing from the brighter sounding pop tracks to the ballads like ‘Apartment 402’ and sultry ‘Body and Mind’ shows the maturity and knowledge of composition that girl in red has. Being able to story tell, create atmosphere and with each song on the album having its own soul is a feat that many artists wish they could pull off in such a brilliant fashion like this.

With songs to belt out in the car too, to dance too and to cry too – if i could make it go quiet is the perfect offering for new fans and old fans alike. Whether this is your taste in music or not, it is an album that can be appreciated on many levels.
