Indulgent chords with self-pitying lyrics drip like fat tears in Gush’s new single “Spiteful”. Encapsulating critical introspection “Spiteful” is Gush’s ode to the big sounds of 1990s grunge bands and a tasty reminder of how good garage indie rock can be.
The band consisting of Louis, Luci, Ben and Dom had their origins playing in garages before getting on Melbourne’s venue circuit. Their sound is a mix of shoegaze with alt-grunge motifs. We are talking about big, brawny fuzzed-out guitars that swagger through the melody and a thumping drum beat that marches along with as much heaviness as the weight of the lyrics. “Spiteful”, written by Louis, is a track recorded way back in 2021 during Melbourne’s second lockdown. It’s easy to see why this song exudes moody angst with the track being about breaking up with someone and swallowing the bitter pill of knowing they’ll be better off without you.

By Louis’ admission, it’s an extravagant song but that is also why it works well. The slow grind is a satisfying nod to post-grunge. There are a lot of similarities to the music of Bush, Puddle of Mudd and even shades of the melodic unrefined textures of Violent Soho. The song was recorded in close friend Josh Bills’ garage studio and that earthiness pulsates through the speakers. “Spiteful” is not the type of song that you easily forget and you’ll likely be nodding your head to the beat before the last bar.
Gush has defined their sound with “Spiteful” and there are a lot of elements that intrigue. This latest release comes across as a strong outing with an edge of playfulness and the band must be feeling stoked with the result.
