Half-Alive took to the stage in Perth on June 28th, choosing The Rechabite as the venue for their first West Australian show. The trio, originating from California, are currently visiting Australia on the backend of their Persona World Tour. Their Australian leg of the tour takes them to various Australian cities, starting with Perth before hitting Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
Even the weather didn’t deter the audience, as they lined up in the pouring rain, without a complaint. When the door opened, people poured into the venue, eager for the long-awaited night to begin.

Sydney-based pop band Egoism opened the show. They were largely unknown to the audience however, their set was well received. The two vocalists’ voices complemented each other, and the band’s overall laid-back nature worked well for them. “Melbourne” came out as the crowd favourite. And their final number “Addison Road” had a number of audience members jumping along.
As the background music drew to a close, the lighting pulled the audience’s attention back to the stage in preparation for Half-Alive’s performance.
Instead of the band jumping onto the stage, “The Monsters” from the “Persona” album artwork appeared on stage, setting the scene for the show ahead as not only a concert, but also as performance art.
Half-Alive kicked off the show with the upbeat song “Sophie’s House”, moving through the first part of their set, they also played the biggest hit from their recent album “Automatic”. Followed by “People” which kept the energy high and introduced two dancers to the stage. The dancers visited the stage on and off for the rest of the evening, with the same interpretive dance style that has been featured in their recent music videos.

“Bleed It Out” had the audience jumping so hard in the chorus, you could feel the floor bouncing along. The singer unexpectedly joined the dancers in a high-energy performance, which had me sympathetically sweating along.
The lead singer impressively switched between different guitars, keys, vocals, and dancing throughout the entire set. Which was a true commitment to the art behind the performance.
“Arrow” highlighted the vocals, as it started with just vocals and keys, before the beat kicked in, which had the audience automatically singing along with the funky beat drop. The energy was kept high with “The Point” which has hands swaying along.
Long drive slowed it right down. The strategic use of the interpretive dancers kept all eyes on the stage during the slower moments.
The dancers took centre stage, dancing and moving to a beat as the band departed the stage for a mini break. Throughout the whole show, the dancers kept well in sync, with the interpretive style of dance making the show unique.

There was an awkward transition time as they reset the stage. Muttering and murmurs from the audience turned into heavy chatter, and disrupted the performance. However, once Half-Alive returned to the stage, the attention was quickly pulled back as a medley was performed. Included was a cover of “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, alongside older original songs like “Beige” and “Hot Tea”. The final song of the medley was “Creature”, which had the audience automatically singing in unison. An amazed cheer and whistling from the audience closed out the set of songs. The medley was a beautiful way to showcase a number of songs and was a highlight of the evening.
The singer used the quiet moment to give a heartfelt speech about the next song titled “Song”, asking the audience to “See the infinite breaking into the present” and talking about the importance of being in this shared moment.
“Lie, Lie” was used to bring the energy back into the room, after the communal self-reflection space that the earlier speech and slower music had brought. Keeping the mood and energy lifted for the remainder of the set. Half-Alive took the opportunity to say their goodbyes, commenting on how attentive the audience had been throughout the show. Finishing off the set with the recent release “R.I.P”, their biggest hit “Still Feel” and “Runaway”.
Half-Alive gave an unexpected and surprising visual performance. The live music and backing tracks were well balanced, with the live instruments still taking centre stage and backing tracks being used as a supporting piece to the performance. The dancers were an unusual but welcome addition to the setup, giving the concert the feeling of an intimate art show.
