Halsey – Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (Album Review)
It’s been a long awaited anticipation for Halsey’ new album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom but It has finally dropped and I cannot contain my excitement. The album is finally here and it has left me an emotional wreck, no seriously it has!. Halsey’ Hopeless Fountain Kingdom explores the idea of a relationship break up and emotional roller coaster ride that comes along with that. In recent interviews Halsey has openly admitted that her last relationship was very much like Romeo and Juliet. As greek mythology and Romeo and Juliet has had a significant influence on shaping Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. Listening to Hopeless Fountain Kingdom from start to finish some of my favourite tracks include the following:

1. The Prologue – An introduction to Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, as Halsey recites a short monologue of Romeo and Juliet, “The story of two star crossed lovers” really sets a particular mood and setting of the listener as it is setting a somewhat expectation for the listener. As it is highlighting the main theme of Romeo and Juliet and emotional roller coaster relationships entail.
2. 100 Letters – A hard hitting ballad that describes the story of two lovers who try to fix their failing relationship. With a mystical but yet cryptic opening to the song as the first verse reads by the line He said one day I’d realise why I don’t have any friends. This track is a thought provoking track as it makes you as the listener ponder whether you have to stay or go.
3. Eyes Closed – Still to this day Halsey’ Eyes Closed makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. With the brutally honest but yet hard hitting emotional lyrics. As these lyrics include “If I keep my eyes closed he looks just like you” and “Would’ve gave it all to you, cared for you, so tell me where I went wrong ?”. As Halsey sings Eyes Closed you can hear the emotion and pain within her voice. This is exactly why Eyes Closed is one of my favourite songs off this album.
4. Heaven In Hiding – This track is a much more upbeat song in comparison to the other tracks on the album which I really like as it gives the album a certain balance between the slow hard hitting ballads and the upbeat heart reaching tracks. However Heaven In Hiding is about a forbidden love affair between two individuals. As the chorus has a rhyming sequence rush, blush, know and show.

5. Alone – Another much more upbeat track off the album, as Alone has a very much of a jazz genre vibe with the use of brass instruments and a piano. The overall beat and undertone of the track is quite happy and cheerful but the lyrics seem to juxtapose this. As the chorus reads “I know you’re dying to meet me, but can I just tell you this, baby as soon as you meet me, you’ll wish you never did”.
9. Lie (feat. Quavo) – Lie has to be my second favourite track off the album ,as the track says if you don’t love me anymore just lie. As this is about her break up with producer Lido as she just started to work and produce songs with him again. As Halsey herself admitted via Twitter that this particular track was the hardest to write and that emotional pain definitely shows through this track.
10. Walls Could Talk – Walls Could Talk is another upbeat track off Hopeless Fountain Kingdom as it very much has an RNB vibe to it. As the track discusses moving on and finding someone new in more a positive light. “If these walls could talk” implying the growing attraction between the two.
11. Bad At Love – The hard hitting belting of the words Bad At Love hits you right in the chest every time Halsey belts out the lyrics. As she is experiencing conflicting feelings whether she wants to stay or go because she knows deep down that she is bad at love..
13. Strangers (feat. Lauren Jauregui) – Strangers is a collaboration with Fifth Harmony’ Lauren Jauregui as the song is a duet between two women as it represents a LGBTQ love song. As it is a Romeo and Juilet love song sung by the perspective of two Bisexual women.
14. Angel On Fire – This track reminisces about the good times when she was the centre of attention and when everything was about her. But this is then juxtaposed as Halsey admits she has social anxiety. As she likes the idea of being the centre of attention but doesn’t necessarily mean she can physically handle it.

Halsey’ Hopeless Fountain Kingdom is out now and it is a must listen, being 6 months into 2017 it might MIGHT be the album of the year in my opinion.
