‘Higher’

Higher is the title of the debut release and mind-bending music video for the new solo psych rock loop project known as Rowboy.

Rowboy is the work of Central Victorian musician Sparrow Daley, who uses an electric guitar and a loop sampling device to create a full flavoured psychedelic jam rock experience. His songwriting is rich with symbolism while telling abstract stories of the animal, human, and extraterrestrial experience. His idiosyncratic vocals deliver cathartic chants and often a lush lyrical journey.

He spent much of 2017 on the East Coast of the US exploring musical ideas and working on blending loop-sampling technology with his highly improvisational performance style.

While travelling between Oregon and California he completed the writing of an album which will be released one song at a time during 2018 and the track Higher is the first of this series.

Rowboy (Sparrow Daley) says of his debut single that,

“This song was something I came up with while living at a small studio in Oregon surrounded by sheep, snow and massive pine trees. That’s when life became spiced rum, instant noodles and cathartic improvisation.” – Rowboy.

A smooth, raw blend of indie-funk and psychedelic-disco rock, Higher, is that track you’d play on repeat during a road trip with all your friends.

The 2/2 beat throughout most of the track layered with classic rock instruments, as well as, trance-like synth sounds.

The verses definitely carry the edgier, rock elements whilst the chorus picks up to a 4/4 beat and adds in elements of psytrance and go-go 80s funk. It is like nothing I’ve heard, and can’t compare it to an artist I know of the top of my head which isn’t a bad thing.

Higher makes you feel like you’re in an alien’s dream world, not in a scary, ‘weird’ way, more like, ‘I’ve just dropped a bunch of acid with my mates and I don’t want the high to end’ kind of way.

Futuristic music that incorporates old-school sound, it is definitely worth a listen…
