There’s an essence of homeliness about Hockey Dad. Perhaps it’s from their strong, surf-rock sound with distant traces to 1960s origins or perhaps it’s the salty air they’ve brought back from the beaches of New South Wales. Either way, there’s great comfort in knowing that a band can bring a crowd together so supportive of their sound for a variety of different reasons.
For dynamic duo Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming, Hockey Dad became another chapter into their history book of friendship. A friendship that would see these childhood best mates become bandmates and ultimately become a force to be reckoned with in Australia’s surf rock scene.

Following the success of five sold-out gigs prior, it was time for Hockey Dad to emerge onto Perth’s Rosemount Hotel stage to bring frothing fans a sixth sold out show. Joining them on the ride was Tiny Little Houses and Totty.
At around 10.30pm, Hockey Dad emerged and were showered in applause and high-pitched whistling. I was here to see the band that always had a place on my friend’s road trip playlist every time we hit up a new town in search of adventure, a band who my two best friends would never shut up about. Not quite as ready as the guy next to me, who seemed to hop up and down way too prematurely muttering,
“I want to see them NOW. NOW I SAY! NOW!”
Soon, everyone around me seemed to morph into beasts who were hungry for sound, sweat glistening their foreheads and ready to pounce.

Before me, I watched as Zach and Billy unleashed their powerhouse of a set. Songs like ‘Homely Feeling’ sent everyone in the crowd wild. The song in particular had seen so much success in such a small space of time and was accompanied by harsh white lights. Generic crowd favourite, “I Wanna Be Everybody” filled the smallish venue with excitement and catchy and relatable lyrics everyone could get behind.
Never once did Billy miss a beat, never once did Zach fail to hit a note. Their onstage chemistry was something I’d never seen before. That’s how best friends in bands should be.
After a long shift at work, it was the perfect night for some crazy good vibes and a good night for Hockey Dad as they had completed yet another sold out show on their Join The Club Tour.
