‘Five’

(Album Review)

Hollywood Undead were excited to announce the upcoming release of their album FIVE! They’re five brothers – for the five members, the number perfectly encapsulates their fifth release. Nothing gets to the essence of the music like this number does. Numerology has a lot of power.  Moreover, it hints at this secret society of fans supporting Hollywood Undead for the past decade. The number is significant.

Infused with rap vocals and head banging riffs, the first single/video from their forthcoming album is “California Dreaming.” which incorporates more rock elements then any other genre in comparison. “California Dreaming” is the first track in this fourteen track release.

.

“It dissects both sides of California,” guitarist J-Dog reveals. “You’ve got the glitz, glamour, sun, and surf. Then, you’ve got the super f–ked side of people not being able to afford rent, celebrities being a–holes, and that fake façade. We wanted to do a heavy song with a Red Hot Chili Peppers-esque chorus. It’s an old school vibe explored in a new way.”

.

This leads to the complete album.

Second track and single “Whatever It Takes” sees Charlie Scene channeling Eminem for his verses that contain rap. Catchy and upbeat just like the bands previous release gets you excited for what is still yet to come, but then the album seems to trickle down just to a slow beat you might put on for background noise up until track seven; “Renegade“. “Renegade” to me is what starts off the album and everything that follows.  Powerful and electric follows with “Black Cadillac,” – with a larger focus with Hip Hop followed up  “Pray (Put ‘Em In the Dirt),” and “Cashed Out.”

Electronica meets Hip Hop on “Riot,” an absolute party anthem. A party tune which can be played at rock venues while the beat allows you to believe you’re at a generic night club. “Riot” preaches “Fuck that shit, let’s start a riot”.

The album “Five” follows the notions of all things California and more. Catchy as anything, the album can be seen to be favourable for fans who are living for this album to be released. Yet again, Hollywood Undead have blended both Hip Hop and Rock; amongst other elements to  create a sound like no other band is portraying on the market.
