Who’s ready for some ultimate sass?

.

Australian rapper Iggy Azalea is back after the release of her single Savior featuring Quavo earlier this year. Scrapping her plans to release her sophomore album formally titled Surviving the Summer, the rapper has dropped two new tracks. Kream featuring Tyga will serve as the lead single to her new EP release Survive the Summer, which will be released on 3 August this year. A second track titled Tokyo Snow Trip has also been released in support of the future EP. Iggy spent the last week posting teaser images across social media platforms for the anticipation of her new music. The Grammy nominated artist rose to prominence in 2014 with her Billboard 100 number one hit Fancy featuring Charli XCX, as well as the successful release of her first studio album The New Classic.

The first few seconds of the instrumental automatically creates a huge vibe for her new track. Iggy uses a constant slow-bounce beat that keeps the track at a mellow pace from beginning to end. The use of bold words and sound effects throughout the tracks background really pushes for a strong emphasis on particular lyrics in the track, highlighting a deeper insight for listeners. There are a few moments throughout the track where there is no instrumental that creates a strategic move to focus once again on the lyrical content of the track. The chilled out tempo can easily resonate with old school influences from the 1990’s to the early 2000’s, giving this track an ultimate throwback feeling.

“A shark in the water,

how you found me?”

The provocative lyrics to this track focus on themes of money and power. Throughout the track, Iggy throws a spotlight on her assets such as her body features and her money to create a sense of dominance towards certain individuals. Tyga raps to similar meaning as he admits that a woman’s physique controls his actions and that money is also a big motivator. Although the lyrics to this track really don’t have much substance, its the vocal pronunciation from both Iggy and Tyga that makes Kream fun and intriguing. The track also samples Wu-Tang Clan’s 1993 hit “C.R.E.A.M.,” with lyrics “cash rules everything around me”. Iggy also references model Bella Hadid and punk prodigy Sid Vicious in her verses.

So is Kream going to set Iggy up with the pathway to a successful EP and possible second studio album? By mixing up her sound a bit and experimenting more with laidback, vintage rhythms, the rapper sets herself up for potential beyond other artists as she’s created a fresh approach. Competing with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Cardi B in the female rap game, we see a distinct spark in Kream that segregates Iggy from typical radio clichés. The tracks aesthetic is quite crisp compared to other releases in 2018 and I believe that it’s going to be one to definitely look out for. If you’re into tunes that are naughty by nature, then listen below and thank me later.
