Who’s ready for a reinvention?

Australian rap prodigy Iggy Azalea is finally back with Migos rapper Quavo to release her first drop of 2018 Savior, which serves as the lead single for her highly anticipated second studio album Surviving the Summer. After a successful build up in 2013, Iggy exploded onto the music scene in 2014 with her smash hit Fancy featuring Charli XCX, which spent seven consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 100 chart. She then went on to release her debut studio album The New Classic and has collaborated and created global hits with the likes of Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Rita Ora. Quavo on the other hand is part of the Grammy nominated hip hop trio Migos where he has ventured into his own solo projects in 2017 including raps in OMG with Camila Cabello and Strip That Down with Liam Payne, both huge hit singles of 2017.

The beginning of the instrumental sounds like an upgrade to Katy Perry’s 2017 hit Bon Appétit. Once the beat kicks in, the simple rhythm makes you immediately want to bop your head to each note of the track. The melody is quite smooth and sensual and works perfectly with the structure and lyrical content of the track. Comparing to Iggy’s previous work, I’m used to hearing bold, heavy beats from start to finish as they have always worked well in her favour. However, Savior has reinvented the Iggy sound as she’s gone for a more delicate tempo with a range of background vocals that indicate that the starlet has really used her absence from music in the last few years to work on new concepts.

In this track, Iggy focuses on themes of love, vulnerability and strength. A distinct difference I’ve noticed from her previous tracks to now is that she tends to sing her raps in Savior instead of just pronouncing the words in her iconic rap style. This change resonates a growth in her music as the songstress is expanding her horizons and experimenting with new possibilities. The lyrics of the track are quite refreshing as the artist raps about being your own savior in a relationship and relying on your own strength to figure things out. Quavo makes up the choruses of the track as he shares Iggy’s message in the track by searching for a savior. As both artists are renowned for rapping, the collaboration from their vocals to their sound works the wonders as they blend together remarkably.

Is this track the perfect comeback for Iggy Azalea? With many career highs and lows since her successful debut album in 2014, I feel a prominent change with Savior that is quite unexplainable and I believe that’s a good thing. The rapper has not only focused on the production and lyrical content of this new release, but she has also recreated an evident change within her musical style and presentation. With the addition of one of the world’s hottest rappers right now, Quavo, I strongly believe that this track is exactly the kind of music Iggy should be putting out into the world following the release of her second studio album. Iggy and Quavo have without a doubt hit it out of the ballpark with this tune.
