It’s always refreshing to talk to a new music artist who is not attempting to ride on the back of current pop music trends but willing to take a risk and work within the mainstream but utilise their influences as guides to creating new work. One of these artists is Sydneysider Peter Senior who has just released his new single Baby I Love You. This follows on from Peter’s last single Cool Ride which received an amazing amount of radio airplay for an independent artist. We sat down with him to see how things were progressing.

.

.

Thanks for chatting with us today Peter. Your new single Baby I Love You has just been released. It’s a great track with hooks all over it and a sound that calls to mind some sixties and seventies era musical styles, in particular, Motown. It’s perhaps considered a bold move to put out music that has an authentic retro feel to it yet is all your own at the same time. Can you tell us a bit about the origins of the song?

Well thank you for the great rap and your interest! My earliest recall of this song was coming up with the idea when I was driving to Huskisson, South of Sydney. I remember this song was born around the same time as another track, ‘Little Lovin’ so I was jumping between those two tracks at that time.

The platform I chose for both of these tracks, was from the golden era of Motown. I’ve always loved the Tempt’s and after seeing a live performance from Richard Street and his band in our local, it emphasised the power of this ‘feel good’ Soul.

.

The lyric appears to be a straight out love song but is there more to it than that?

The lyrics I wrote as comforting words for my daughter. If ever I’m away or when I make the big journey, I’ll always be there in her heart. I changed the original lyric in the chorus from Amy to Baby, so she wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. She’s grown up so much in the last few years!

.

Your last release Cool Ride got a lot of interest and attention and has helped to make your name a little more familiar out there in the music world. What does it feel like to have received such a great response?

I’ve been really grateful and surprised for the interest and help by so many people!

.

Does the positive reaction to your music energise you?

Always, I love to meet people who give their time unconditionally to bring appreciation and awareness to someone’s art. That only charges me up for the moment though. When you make music that you love yourself, get in tune with a great idea or get lost in a recording performance, that’s what really energises me!

.

If you were to describe Baby I Love You to someone who hasn’t heard it, what would you say?

A throwback to the good time sounds of the early seventies. The simple beat makes way for the melody and harmony shine through the music.

.

Do you think it has all the hallmarks of your sound?

In a way because I love melody, live tempos and my vocal is pretty raw. This won’t be the last time I’ll record in this style. I’ll set the genre from what I think serves the song best.

.

We know that you have a debut album which is already out there for people to have a listen to, but does the success of Cool Ride and no doubt the anticipation about this new track help in deciding on the next stage of your music career?

I think so, I now see a clear way forward. Still the main thing I am trying to focus on is the creative side. If I let that go completely and focus on promotive things, It’ll drive me crazy!

.

.

Do you now have any plans to do some live shows?

Yes definitely! It’s on our ‘to do’ list. Still at the moment I’m focused on an important recording session in a few weeks. The thought of live performing these tracks excites me, especially tracks like this one.

.

How do you feel about the current state of the Australian music scene?

It’s hard for me to say overall since by focus has been putting more in to what I do but from my first real crack at putting stuff out I’m almost overwhelmed by the support! Especially considering that I don’t conform to the norm!

.

Despite all the attention Cool Ride has received, do you feel like there’s more that can be done about making sure Australian made music gets a fair go?

Like anything, I think there is always more but I’m definitely not a politician! I’ll leave that for you guys! I’m just happy to keep recording and putting out new music.

.

Is there a video for Baby I Love You, and if not, do you intend to shoot one?

For this one I have had a clay animation, cast from images of my daughter, Milo (our record label mascot) and myself. It depicts a scenario where a girl is saddened by her father’s death but is comforted by his memory in her grief. The moral being that he never leaves her.

.

What’s been the best part of your experience releasing your music to the world?

Just that people care. There are people that want to help you…sure some require money for their services (recording is expensive) but there are good genuine people all around that thrive on great results, like yourself!

.

What are some of your plans for the future post Baby I Love You? Is there going to be more writing, more recording, more promotional work?

Funnily enough there will be a classical EP thrown in before a Christmas track to tail out the year. In the new year we will promote another 1 or 2 ‘On The Edge’ single’s before introducing a track from our ‘Into The Distance’ album . That’s on the promotional front.

On the recording front we’re booked in to studios 301 in Sydney to bookend my 4th album Morning Sky. After those tracks are mixed, hopefully by the end of the year, we will have three full unreleased albums to launch!! Happy days!

.

Well, thanks for sitting down with us today Peter, cheers.

My pleasure, once again, thanks for your support.
