Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
I’ve always wanted to be a performer, specifically… I crave the stage and moving my body and using my voice and connecting with people and other musicians. Nothing makes me feel more alive. The first moment I knew I wanted to do this was when I watched Madonna on DVD at age 9. My first attempt at song writing was terrible haha I was 13, but I persevered, and found I’m most prolific with writing lyrics.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
My music is all the best bits that pop/punk has given us over the years, but the lyrical content is simply what I’m going through. I think what really resonates firstly is the sonic power that music has in bringing communities together. I mean, give us a tune we can head bang to and we’re hooked! Followed by my exploration of mental health and the metaphors I use that offer something tangible to picture, I don’t think there’s many who wont relate to a lot of this content, particularly the younger generations who are at the mercy of a dishevelled environment and economy that past generations callously tossed at our feet.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Artistic queens of pop inspire a lot of the visuals in my artistry; bold colour, loud patterns, creative music videos/shows, daring fashion, all donned by the likes of Madonna, Gwen Stefani & Lady Gaga, for example. Sonically I adore artists like Paramore, Stand Atlantic & Tonight Alive for their soaring vocals, gritty inflections and personable lyrical content. And come on, all these examples are just pure bad asses in a STILL male dominated industry.

Your debut single ‘Not The Beginning’ has just been released! How did that come to life?
It’s been a really weird time because of the global pandemic we’re facing… A huge part of me was hesitant to release it while this was happening, predominantly because it felt as though every single musician in the world was turning to the internet to monetise their art, and under normal circumstances it can feel as though the online market is competitive enough let alone right now! But I also feel really strongly that both creatives and non-creatives need now, more than ever, art in our lives. So I pushed through and I’m already receiving messages of gratitude for supplying something that’s fun to listen to in a time of so much pain and uncertainty.
Have you got more singles, or perhaps an EP or Album, on the drawing board? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Of course! I worked really hard this past year on the music side of things so I can spend 2020 releasing it! All I will say for now is there are going to be several more tunes coming soooooon, and I’m particularly excited about this next release, which will explore my relationship with social media.
If you could perform with any artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Oh no I have such a long list hahaha, but right now I’m obsessed with Waterparks and I would love to smash out a show with them. Their music matches my energy level and I think it would be sick to collab.
.
.
Where do you see yourself in three years’ time?
I have really big visions and want to take this as far as possible. Performing & touring is high on my to do list, but also creating a community of empathetic, creative and aspirational audience members for these shows. Anything I do I want it to be wholesome af.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
I mean the reality is I’ve been singing into a hairbrush for as long as I can remember, and nothing will stop that haha, but there’s something about sensing anticipation in the air, the pressure of putting on a good show, feeling the bass through the speakers, the sweat pooling in every item of clothing, and the roar of folks singing your tunes back at you, each with their own interpretation and connection to the songs, that collectively forms an energy that’s like no other.

New pop-punk project
ALEX ANDRA
Tackling mental health
and personal growth
in debut single
‘NOT THE BEGINNING’
Perth’s Paige Savill re-emerges for her new solo Pop/Punk project Alex Andra, with her debut single ‘Not The Beginning’ and signing to WA independent label Doomity Records.
Perth’s Paige Savill has garnered attention in new-wave Synth-Pop band I Call Vall with two WAM Award nominations and performances alongside the likes of Tonight Alive, The Faim and Theory of a Deadman; as well as personal accolades including selection in WA’s first APRA AMCOS female singer/songwriter mentorship program in 2018, and involvement as mentor through the Girls Rock! WA camps. Armed with her passion to creatively push boundaries and use her art as a platform to create a better world, Savill is now embarking on her first solo voyage with new Pop/Punk project Alex Andra.
Alex Andra captures vulnerable emotion with effervescent spirit, filling lonely silence with catchy hooks and powerful melodies. Drawing influence from inspirations such as Stand Atlantic, Paramore and Yours Truly, Alex Andra delivers high-energy, anthemic Pop/Punk with her debut single ‘Not The Beginning’ – out now through Doomity Records.
‘Not The Beginning’ grapples with the ideas of personal growth and maintaining relationships through these transitions, the track lending itself as a vehicle to drive home Alex Andra’s message of the intensity of mental health and how crucial a part music and art can play in gathering a community to continue the dialogue around such topics, and how cathartic that can be as an artist.
In Alex Andra’s words: “As an emerging artist I want emphasis to be put on how this music is not only giving myself and others an ability to share and work through some personally deep things, but is also enabling communities to gather together in solidarity. The energies that Pop/Punk music provides are powerful. They bring with them a sense of strength, intertwined with content that, albeit dark at times, vulnerably outreaches and cradles the loneliness we didn’t know we shared.”
The lyrical content tackles Alex Andra’s expression of her personal experience working to “acknowledge how the turmoil in past relationships was greatly my responsibility” with the metaphor of dirt referring to Savill’s therapy and transferral of blame in the lyrics “Clawed through dirt, only found blood under these nails was always mine;” while “I am shapeshifting, meet me here once more. You want the old me? I’ll pass” encompasses the message of moving on and moving forward.
Savill explains: “I’ve been through some of the most intense and transformative therapy over the past year, and this single serves as a recognition of that and a statement acknowledging I don’t want to go back.”
‘Not The Beginning’ was co-written and produced by Paige Savill (vocal melody and lyrics) and Jay Huxtable (music), with recording and mastering by Huxtable at Oracle Sound (Necropathy, Shangrila, Grenade Brain).
Alex Andra is the first official signing to Perth, WA’s Doomity Records – the independent music label co-founded by Mat Weaven a.k.a Tobias Wonderdog, Matt Hatton from Mad Hatter Productions, and Jay Huxtable from Oracle Sound studios. Doomity Records is focused on creating more opportunities and better mental health outcomes in the music industry, making the message of ‘Not The Beginning’ a fitting first release for the label.
‘Not The Beginning’ was released through Doomity Records on Wednesday 25 March, with more to come from Alex Andra and Doomity Records in 2020 following this debut.
