Direct from Barcelona, via Sydney’s underground RnB scene, ANGE is a neo-soul singer-songwriter blending electronic and pop influences, drawing comparisons to international artists like NAO and KIMBRA. Raised on her Dad’s eclectic vinyl collection, ANGE began making music in her teens, incorporating influences from Stevie Wonder to Beyoncé. After moving to Sydney in 2015 she got her hands into production and started experimenting with new beats and sounds, crafting her influences into a sound all her own.

How did it all begin? Where did you develop your interest in performing music to an audience?
I was naturally drawn to music since I was very young. At 6 I was obsessed with a Spanish talent show called ‘Menudas Estrellas’ where kids would perform their favourite artists’ song and get a full makeover to look like them. I wanted to go sooo bad but I was really shy… I knew I wanted to sing and perform since I was little but I kept it quiet for a while and just did house shows for my mum and grandma, best audience.

What kind of music did you grow up on? Which artists inspired you?
I grew up listening to so many different artists, my dad loved playing records at home and we often listened to Frank Sinatra, Tina Turner, Santana, Queen… 90s pop was a huge influence growing up too, I have to admit I was a big Britney’s fan. Later on, I got into Jazz, Funk and R&B.

What is Spain like for developing your music tastes? Much different to here?
Spain has so many music influences, which is what I love about it. From Pop and Rock music coming from the states, to Latin American rhythms to Rumba, Reggae, Hip Hop and obviously Flamenco. I grew up listening to many genres which all influenced me in some way or another. Australia in comparison, has bigger Country and Indie Rock scenes as well as electronic music subgenres that are quite unique which don’t prevail in Spain as much.

With your new Single “Like I’m Crazy”, can you describe its origins and evolution?
‘Like I’m Crazy’ is an empowering song about regaining control over your choices and not giving a fuck what others think. It talks about the danger of losing yourself in a relationship that doesn’t serve you and the importance of putting yourself first.
The idea for the song came from a chat I had with one of my best friends about how to overcome dependency and self-doubt. For me ‘Like I’m Crazy’ is a reminder to feel good about who you are and be bold.

I know how challenging the creative and producing process can be. How good did it feel to complete the second single Vs the first?
Oh it felt so good!!! I was so excited when both songs were recorded but slightly more with ‘Like I’m Crazy’ as it took longer to finish, I actually wrote it two years ago. The song went through a few different phases and I eventually left it for a while… one day going through my demos I re- connected with it and knew I had to finish it and record it. When it was done it was the best feeling!

Is there an EP/Album on the drawing board?
An EP or Album is definitely on my mind. At the moment, I just want to keep writing and collaborating with other artists but the idea of an album really excites me. I’d love to work on a concept piece in the near future and go beyond the music element…

How do you find the Songwriting process? Is there a big appetite to write more or is it a “right time, right place” process?
I really enjoy writing and I try to do it often but I don’t like to force things. Sometimes an idea flows very naturally and I write a song in minutes and other times it takes longer to find the right words or message. I try to find the balance between the two and be kind to myself when things aren’t happening.

Any shows or tours coming up?
Yeah! I have a single launch coming up on the 22nd of June in Sydney, I’ll be playing at the Down Under Space at Freda’s presenting ‘Like I’m Crazy’ and sharing some new songs too. I’m also doing some gigs in Spain this August which I’m really excited about.

If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, whom would you pick and why? (Dead or Alive)
I’d pick Donna Summer she was a powerhouse, an incredible women with an amazing voice and the best outfits, it would be the hottest tour tbh.

What are your major goals or milestones for the future?
I want to tour and share my music with people all over the world. I’d love to play Glastonbury one day, have my own studio and live making music for the rest of my time.
