It was a classic case of time zone confusion as my interview with Enumclaw began. Chatting from Sydney, Australia, I found myself diving into a conversation with a band rooted in the Pacific Northwest, specifically Washington State, USA. We kicked off discussing the inevitable time differences between continents, which served as a unique icebreaker before we delved into deeper topics.

Enumclaw is a band that began its journey a few short years ago, but their sound and impact have already made waves in the alternative rock scene. Founded in Western Washington, the band came together from shared connections in their local music scene. Nathan had been in bands like Mixtape Minus and Home Movies, while other members, including LaDaniel and Eli, were friends and collaborators who eventually completed the lineup. Their dynamic origin story includes everything from struggling to find a bass player to Nathan’s brother Eli stepping in and ultimately helping solidify their lineup.

Though they’ve been together for just under four years, Enumclaw has already played some memorable shows, with their Chicago gig in March 2023 standing out as a fan-favorite performance. They’ve also enjoyed highlights like playing in Amsterdam, which they describe as a particularly “epic” festival experience.

When asked how they’d describe their sound, the band emphasized their place between indie and alternative rock, frequently drawing comparisons to Dinosaur Jr., albeit with a more Pacific Northwest twist. Their music reflects the grunge and raw energy of that region, while still remaining accessible and authentic to their journey. Their songs tend to resonate deeply with listeners, with fans sharing personal stories at shows about how their music touches them on emotional levels. One memorable interaction involved a fan connecting with a song about one of the band members’ uncles, who had recently passed, and the fan’s own similar family experience.

While their sound draws from influences like Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement, Enumclaw’s work has become a unique blend of raw, emotional, and, at times, experimental elements. Their collaboration with Flight Facilities highlights this willingness to venture into new sonic territories, showcasing their adaptability in blending genres.

The band’s second full-length album presents a more refined and thoughtful approach, having taken lessons from their debut. They played many of the new songs live before recording them, allowing them to evolve naturally through live performance feedback. This slower, more deliberate process has resulted in a record they feel is more mature and true to their live energy.

Enumclaw’s current favorite songs to perform live include “Change” and “Sink,” both of which resonate well with fans and reflect their evolving sound. And when asked about dream collaborations, they pointed to none other than PJ Harvey as a significant influence—so much so that every Enumclaw record, they admit, is an attempt to recreate the magic of Harvey’s work.

Looking ahead, Enumclaw has a few shows lined up, including in London and Manchester. But after that, they’re eager to get back to the studio and focus on creating new music. For Enumclaw, the thrill of making new songs far outweighs the repetition of playing old ones. While there may be no immediate plans to tour Australia, they expressed excitement about the idea of eventually heading Down Under.

Closing out our interview, I asked Enumclaw about their bucket list goals. For them, it’s simple: being able to do the band full-time and live off their music is the dream. Until then, they’ll keep refining their craft and delivering their distinct sound to fans all over the world.

Enumclaw’s story is a testament to the power of community, raw talent, and staying true to oneself, and it’s exciting to see what’s next for them.
