Albury/Wodonga bred, Melbourne-based artist Boy Graduate is one of Australia’s most dynamic songwriters, seamlessly bridging the gap between the two diverse genres of Pop and Hip-Hop.

Boy Graduate has dropped numerous EP’s across the last few years, including his 2016 EP, ‘Girl To Boy Ratio’, which included popular singles such as ‘Too Cool For That’ (produced by Cam Bluff), ‘Never Watch TV’ and ‘She Don’t Believe Me’. However, Boy Graduate kicked off his 2017 in a huge way, and it only looks like it’s going to get bigger from here on out.

With a loyal fan base and rapidly growing social media following, Boy Graduate’s future boasts no boundaries, and is only met with major ambition. Dave Bruce asked some questions recently and got some interesting answers.

How would you describe your journey in the music industry so far, and where do you want to go from here with your music?

Pretty eventful so far haha, it’s definitely been harder than I imagined it would be, challenging but also rewarding! As for the future it’s just about building, becoming a better artist and keeping level headed for sure.

.

When did you know you wanted to make music and perform as your career?

Subconsciously I think I’ve always wanted to perform, I was that kid that would always be pulling the jokes and trying to make people laugh during school but it wasn’t till I finished high school when I decided to start chasing a music career.

.

How do you find the balance between your everyday life and your musical one?

It can get pretty full on, especially being independent and having to fund everything yourself, you have no choice but to have a second life of working etc but hey it is what it is!

.

Who have been your musical influences or artists you have admired growing up?

Growing up it was Jay-Z, 50 cent, Eminem and Lil Wayne. More so after high school it was Kanye, Drake and local artist like Allday that I started looking up to.

.

Are there any artists or musicians that you have been so impacted by that it changed your view on life or mentality toward music?

Dr.Dre would have to be at the top of that list, his philosophy and work ethic is truly inspirational, it’s more than music for him. I would love to get into producing thanks to Dr.Dre.

.

How do you feel your sound has developed throughout your time playing and performing?

I love where my sounds at right now, I feel like the music I’m making now was the music I wanted to make back when I first started but I didn’t have the skill or resources, shout out to my team, I wouldn’t be anywhere without them! Oh and performing for me is so important as well, I can’t wait to be back to doing shows and giving my all.

.

You’ve just released a new single ‘I’m Not Ready’. How did that feel? What were its origins?

Pretty much where all my songs originate from, heartbreak and being confused  haha, but it also has a happy vibe to it, as if to say hey, it’s not all bad! I feel great about it, it’s my first time working with an international artist and having Brian Fresco on it is truly crazy to me.

.

.

What performance in your career so far has been the most memorable, or surreal and why?

The Tivoli with Bliss N Eso while I was main support for their sold out “Dopamine Tour” in 2017. For a few reasons;
– It was my birthday so it was lit
– It was the biggest show of the tour
– It was the show where I truly realised I wanted to chase this music thing and was also the show that I promised myself to never give up, no matter how hard it gets
Bliss N Eso’s manager had pulled us aside before our set and gave probably the most inspiring talk I’ve ever witnessed haha, he talked about the industry and how important it was to stay connected to your fan base, and also gave away some other huge keys, I’ll never forget that talk!

.

Do you have any touring plans for 2018?

Yes, for sure, it wouldn’t be a good year without a tour in there somewhere.

.

If you weren’t working in the music industry, what else do you think you would be doing with your life right now?

I’d be creating marketing campaigns, which is what I majored in at university. Marketing has always been a fascinating thing to me, one of my all time heroes is Richard Branson, if I had double the time I would try be like him as well haha.

.

What’s one song fans might be surprised you really like?

Zara Larsson –  Lush Life.

.

If you could choose only one muso, artist or band to collaborate with who is no longer alive who would you choose?

Michael Jackson, even though he’s way out of my league!

.

If you had to listen to one song on repeat the rest of your life, what song and why?

Lil Uzi VertXO Tour Llif3, because have you heard that song? Haha.

.

What item of clothing would you be most upset to lose, and why?

My reversible Saint Laurent jacket, because it’s two jackets in one and I can’t be losing two jackets.

.

Where can fans see you perform live next, and download or stream your music?

I’m having a Melbourne show soon but it’s still yet to be confirmed, as for the rest of the country, you might have to wait till the end of the year! I think the best place to find everything to do with me is at my official website – www.boygraduate.com
