Boys At The Back

.

How did the band come together? Where did it all begin?
The band started when Anton and Elliott began trading original ideas back and forth in 2022. They were both at uni, jamming on anything from riffs to half-finished songs, and quickly realised they wanted to take it further. Through the uni scene, they crossed paths with Izzy and Dan, and that’s when Boys At The Back really started to take shape.

Briefly describe your journey to date.
We started out leaning into a more pop-punk sound – it was fun, fast, and matched where we were at the time. But as we kept writing and gigging, our sound naturally shifted towards glam rock. That’s where our real compositional interests were, and we found ourselves pulling more from these glam and classic rock influences whilst still maintaining a modern approach.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
We’re a glam rock band, but we’re very aware of not falling into the “revival act” trap. We write with the energy and drama of the glam era, but we mix in influences from hard rock, blues, and even bits of metal. The result is something familiar enough to hook people in, but fresh enough to stand on its own. We think that fans connect because the songs are big, loud, and unapologetic but still have musical and lyrical substance beneath the flashy aesthetic!

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Mötley Crüe, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Baby Animals, Extreme – all bands that brought both showmanship and musicianship to the table.

Your latest single ‘Goodbye’ has just been released! What’s it all about? Describe its origin and evolution.
Izzy first wrote the bones of Goodbye during a uni session back in 2022. Originally, it had more of a country-rock feel, but we decided to lean into what we do best and give it a glam rock overhaul. It quickly became our live show closer – we’ve been ending sets with it for the past couple of years, and every time it gets the crowd going. After seeing how well it connected, we knew it deserved a proper recording. The song’s evolved a lot since that first version, but the heart of it’s the same.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Definitely. We’re recording an album right now, and in the meantime we’ll be rolling out one single a month to keep the momentum building.

What tours and events are coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
We’re looking forward to putting on some big headline shows towards the end of the year to celebrate the upcoming single releases. Before then, we’ve got a run of gigs lined up in the CBD and Inner West. Full details will drop on our socials as they’re locked in!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Van Halen or Baby Animals! Van Halen – they perfected the mix of technical brilliance and sheer chaos, playing with them would be an unbelievable experience. Baby Animals because they’re one of Australia’s finest and our favourites! Sharing a stage with Suze DeMarchi would be both an honour and a masterclass in owning a crowd.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
We want to push glam rock to the forefront of the Australian music scene – get it back on the charts and prove it’s still got something to say. We’re putting in the work: writing constantly, being ruthless about only keeping the best material, and building our online presence because, like it or not, social media is the game.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
You only get two chances to make what you love, when you’re starting out and when you’re at the top – so make what you love and make sure it’s great! We took a while to fully figure out our sound. We dabbled in a few different subgenres of rock, we tried heading down the more pop-punk route at first. Our songs were strong, but we hadn’t quite found our ‘sound’ until 2025. Even though it felt slightly frustrating at the time, we are grateful that it did take some experimentation, because we are now so comfortable and confident in this new sound.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Nothing beats the energy of a crowd when everything clicks. Our Guys Like You single launch at Bootleggers last year was a massive moment. That night was sold out, sweaty, and unforgettable. We are happiest when we have the crowd up and dancing along with us. We love making our shows feel as much like a party as possible!

Now for some quickfire questions to get a little personal:
1. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? We definitely had some crazy gigs and wild nights out earlier on but we make sure to play it safe these days…health always comes first!
2. What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? All things music, and guitar specifically!
3. What is the thing you like most about yourself? We are so lucky to not only be bandmates, but also just really great friends. Getting along so well as friends makes every rehearsal, show, or songwriting session that much more fun and enjoyable. No matter what life throws at us, we’ve always got each other and our music.

Finally, let’s find out what your current (or all time) favorites are –
Album – Pornograffiti by Extreme is a huge influence for us – and perhaps one of the greatest glam albums of all time!
Artist – Ozzy Osbourne & Black Sabbath, on repeat at the moment – Rest in peace, king!
Movie – Too hard to pick just one! But we are all fans of the Rocky films, the Star Wars universe and of course, the classic – Blues Brothers.
Place to visit – We love our food, specifically chicken, so you’ll often find us heading to Frangos, KFC, or Chargrill Charlie’s for a feed.
Venue to play – Ramblin Rascal Tavern in the heart of Sydney’s CBD! The best drinks, served by the greatest staff, and the coolest dive bar you’ll ever come across! We love the team at Rascals and are very grateful for the times they’ve had us come and perform.
Food – We have a collective love for KFC – rehearsals often into the family burger box from KFC.
Drink – We are all big fans of Coke Zero and Pepsi Max! Elliott prefers beer though.
Person in History – We credit everything to our parents! We are so grateful to have incredibly supportive families and friends around us who have helped us achieve all that we have so far.
Tattoo – Anton has a sweet matching tattoo with his dad, and a music tattoo on his wrist – but the rest of us are blank canvases at this stage!
