SEMANTICS talks New Album, Fantasy-Inspired Art, and Touring Excitement
By Audrey Songvilay, AmnplifyHey Amnplify fans, Steph here, bringing you an exciting interview with Callum from Semantics as the band gears up for the release of their new album, I Feel It All At Once. This Brisbane-based indie punk band has already teased us with a few singles, and fans are buzzing with anticipation. In our chat, Callum dives into the inspiration behind their latest work, the unique album art, and their massive upcoming Australian tour.
The Album: I Feel It All At Once
Recently released, I Feel It All At Once is shaping up to be an evolution of the Semantics sound, while still paying homage to their previous work. Callum shared how they approached the album with the mindset of building on what worked in their debut album but doing it even better. Self-produced and written together in their own space, the band crafted something they are truly proud of. Callum mentioned, “We all learned so much over the past couple of years, and that personal development really shines through in this album.”
One standout aspect of the new release is the album artwork, which might surprise some fans. “It’s got that 80s high fantasy, oil painter style,” Callum explained. They commissioned Donato Giancola, a renowned painter who has worked on Dungeons & Dragons, Magic the Gathering, and Lord of the Rings. Callum joked about how the metal-looking artwork might mislead listeners since the album is far from heavy metal. Still, it adds an intriguing contrast and a nod to classic 80s aesthetics.
The Love Language Music Video: Knights, Castles, and Bottle Shops
The Love Language music video features a knight—literally. Shot in Brisbane at Sunshine Castle on the Sunshine Coast and around Norman Park, the video’s quirky storyline includes a knight invading a bottle shop. This knight, played by a local medieval combat expert named Mario, donned real steel plate armor, adding an authentic medieval vibe to the video. “He was dead serious about it,” Callum said, marveling at how Mario’s dedication made the video truly stand out, even if the video itself is a bit out there compared to the song’s introspective themes.
Speaking of the song, Love Language delves into the complexities of communication in relationships. Inspired by bands like Basement and their ability to blend vulnerability with introspection, Callum’s lyrics embrace personal reflection. “It’s about wearing some of my bad habits on my sleeve and being realistic about it,” he explained. This vulnerability makes the song relatable, connecting with listeners on a deeper level.
Touring and What’s Next
With a huge tour lined up across both city and regional venues, Semantics is ready to hit the road. “We’re just really, really keen to get out and see everyone,” Callum shared, noting that they’ve been hermits for the last two years. Touring is not only about the music but also reconnecting with fans, friends, and the broader music community.
This tour will be their biggest yet, with stops at new venues they’ve never played before, including some fan favorites like Jive Bar in Adelaide. “We’ve loved every venue we’ve ever played in Adelaide, but Jive Bar is the best,” Callum said, hinting at the excitement for their Adelaide show.
