Chasing Velvet

.

Soon to make their foray onto the pop music scene, CHASING VELVET are Australia’s freshest all-female pop duo, who’s debut single ‘If I May’ suggests they’re a new breed of rising talent. The Gold Coast pair are quirky, energetic and have their sights firmly set on new horizons.

Forming in early 2017 having met through mutual friends, Chasing Velvet consists of vocalist Amira Talbot and Vocalist/Drummer Naomi Grashuis – their sound a very R’n’B influenced vocal backed by catchy melodic pop tracks that shows a very sassy and edgy side on one hand and a vulnerable expose on the other. Having spent much of the past year readying their debut EP titled ‘Replay’, the pair are bursting at the seam to finally release the first taste of their seven-track extended play in the form of lead single ‘If I May’.

Dave Bruce caught up with Naomi and Amira recently and asked them some searching questions.

.

How did the two of you find each other? Where did it all begin?

Chasing Velvet began on one sunny day in internet land, we knew of each other through mutual friends online and quickly established an ever growing list of similarities, the biggest of course being music.

.

What kind of music did you both grow up on?

We both grew up listening to quite different genre of music,

(Amira) My mum was super into what was on the radio at the time, from The Beatles, The Carpenters to Delta Goodrem, and because of this I listened to a lot of strong female vocalists and that certainly influenced my singing.

(Naomi) My family was also in a similar boat however we delved into a lot of 50s through to 80s with a particular love for Elvis, Prince UB40. Influencing my drumming however was listening to Phill Collins from an early age.

.

How do you find the balance between your everyday lives and your musical ones?

The balance between work/study life and music life is a continuing struggle that we have been dealing with since the beginning, finding 2 or more days to rehearse each week has been a priority or us both, so when we are working and studying, we both try to get our work done and quickly and efficiently as possible, we hope that one day we are in the position that our music life becomes our full time career.

.

You’ve just released your new single “If I May”. Can you describe its origins and evolution?

The origins of “If I May” have been interesting to say the least, we began with a demo we created out of the need of more demos, and Naomi and I weren’t really vibing with the lyrics but quite liking everything else (chords and melody) so with our producer helping us, we set out to re do all the lyrics, this proved difficult as we had the old lyrics stuck in our heaps. Funnily enough, what is now “If I May” was ultimately written about the fact that we didn’t know what to write about.

.

It is the first single from your new EP “Replay” isn’t it? When will it be released and are there any special tracks on the EP that mean more than others?

The EP ”Replay” will be available on the 4th of August, but pre-orders begin on the 20th of July. A specific track that means a lot to us is probably Ascendency, based off a song Naomi had written, it was the first track to be properly recorded and it really symbolises what we are trying to do in the music industry, come into our own with the kind of sound we want and ascend through that.

.

How do you see your sound progressing in the future? Who are and have been your inspirations?

I think as a whole, our sound has already undergone a huge transformation. We originally began with a lot more edge and heaviness to our sound and through this release, explored a more clean, modern sound that we really enjoy. We see our sound progressing in this direction of mature and mainstream sounding songs with influence from Clean Bandit, Dua Lipa, Maroon 5 and Julia Micheals.

.

If someone had never listened to Chasing Velvet before, what song of yours would you recommend them?

As per the first single, we would both recommend “If I may” to people who haven’t heard of us as its just a really cool jam! Its easy to get into and will always make the listener want to get down and boogie!

.

It’s only been a year or so. Where do you envision yourself to be in the next 3-5 years?

A big hope that we have is that we are able to pursue our music full time, we would love to sole focus ourselves in creating and learning all things music.

.

Do you have any plans to tour the EP?

As of now, we don’t have any plans to tour, our last tour was really successful whoever we are focusing on new projects and the future in that respect.

.

If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, whom would you pick? (Dead or Alive)

An amazing artist that we would absolutely love to go on tour with would be Dua Lipa, she’s had such a positive influence to not only us as people but in the way we constructed this EP. She’s accomplished so much despite being so young and seems like someone who would be really cool and chill to hang out with as well as learn form.

.

Are there any venues or locations you aspire to play in the future? What are your major goals or milestones for the future?

For both of us, I think its more about the people than the place, we just want to perform to as many peoples we can in the largest venue needed for those people. Performing live is a massive highlight for us so getting to share that with as many people as possible is ideal.

.

Finally, this is a paragraph dedicated to some quick discovery. May sound corny, but for the fans, can you tell me your favourite album, artist, movie, place, drink, meal and person (living or dead) and some brief reasons why? Answer some or all please?

Amira

Favourite Album – Vessel by Twenty One Pilots – Such a great album plus it contains my favourite songs from TØP of all time , “Holding on to you” and “Guns for hands” Fun fact: I cried during “Holding on to you” when I saw the live in 2015 when my phone spazzed out and missed the beginning of the song.

Fav Movie – Burlesque, with Christina Aguliera and Cher, they are such amazing actresses with amazing voices and it has such a great sound track with my favourite being “Bound to you” sung by the Queen Christina Aguilera. As big fan of musicals, I Iove the theatrical elements of the movie.

Song – The Grey by Icon for Hire largely because of the strong female vocalist but all because of the atmosphere this song creates, the piano and strings just make me feel almost empowered, it also an ode to my “heavy” or “darker’ phase of music taste but that song always stayed with me.

Place – Bed. More specifically, under the covers

Food – Anything with cheese (Pizza, Lasagne, grilled cheese)

Naomi

Fave Album mylo xyloto  – Coldplay, although it doesnt contain my all time fave (strawberry swing), it has all the other songs I feel the most emotional movement to, all in the one album.

Artist – Hands down, always the hardest question, but John Mayer. His rhythm on guitar is out of this world, a voice that can put a baby to sleep, & he’s an ultimate genius for creating the best heartbreak/love lyrics.

Movie – more like moviesss, ‘The Perks of being a wallflower’, just because I love both the book & the movie…& ‘Princess & the Frog’, I love Disney.

Place – Anywhere that has a good vibe. It’s always good to move around & explore, being where positive vibes are always becomes a fave place.

Drink – water that changes into wine. I love an occasional glass of red wine.

Meal – I cant pick between authentic Indonesian Rendang or Japanese miso ramen !

Person – too many important people in my life to only pick one.
