Have you always wanted to be a musician?
Yes, but I never really wanted to be a singer. I thought I would form a band where I could be the guitarist / songwriter and someone else could sing my songs. I tried that with a singer and always felt like they couldn’t sing it how I thought they should, so I realised my full potential as a control freak and ended up trying it myself.

When did you get the song writing bug?
When I was about 10 and had a go playing with GarageBand on my dads computer. My piano teacher had encouraged me to start making songs, and he helped me record a demo. I stayed interested in it for a while but it wasn’t until I was 15 when I really started caring about it more.

How would you describe your sound?
The sound on ‘Redo’ feels like it was baked in the sun. I wanted to make it punchy and sizzly and kind of washy. In terms of genre, I was definitely inspired by psychedelic music from the 90s and 2010s.

Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Well truthfully I feel that’s not really up to me, and with only one song out so far that’s hard to guess at. It totally depends on what a person values in the music they choose to listen to. When I wrote ‘Redo’ I valued nice melodies, high energy rock production, self-analysing lyrics, etc. If those values shine through in the song I guess people may resonate with that, but they may also resonate with something I didn’t expect which would be awesome.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I am most inspired by Cameron Winter at the moment, mainly as a vocalist and lyricist. Haven’t heard lyrics that basically make me hallucinate what they’re describing in a very long time. I don’t know what his intentions behind the music were, but for me I really admire his willingness to sound super weird as a vocalist. Everyone needs to embrace weird singing more, myself included.

Your new single ‘REDO’ has just been released!  Describe its origin and evolution.
‘Redo’ is approximately 7 years old, and it’s been almost exactly the same since then. At one point I tried recording it with a band around 2019, and the keys player Jack North wrote that keyboard melody for the chorus, which was great. That band broke up and I left that song behind for a while because I wanted to focus on writing newer music, but when I decided I wanted to release music again I thought it would be nice to start at the start. So I re-recorded the whole song, got Jack’s blessing on keeping his keyboard part in there, and here it is.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Maybe. I’ve written plenty of songs over the years, I do intend to release more.

Any tours or events coming up soon?
Maybe. I do have a band, I would be very keen to play shows.

What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Releasing more music and playing shows would be great.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
That’s hard to answer, because whoever it is I get the feeling I would cramp their style. I would rather just watch, at most I’d wanna be up the back of the stage playing tambourine. It would probably be fun to play tambourine for King Gizz. Let’s go with that.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I suppose I just want to be a good songwriter, and a good artist. That’s something I will always be progressing towards because there’s always more to discover. Ultimately I want to share my love of music with people, that’s the medium I’ve chosen to express myself with. If I wasn’t writing songs I would be making playlists and sending them to people.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
I have always been afraid of making something only for it to turn out as a piece of trash. But I have never once regretted making something, even the pieces of trash. So just make stuff.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
It’s when you can relax and actually be in the moment with the people you’re playing with and the people you’re playing to. Playing with friends, for friends, is the best feeling I’ve had performing live.

What’s been the career highlight so far?
The career is the highlight.

Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –
FAVOURITE:
Album – Changes too often, but my first favourite was Lonerism
Artist – Changes too often, but my first favourite was The Beatles
Movie – Speed Racer
Place to visit – A friend’s house
Venue to play – The Trocadero Room
Food – Pasta
Drink – Orange juice
Person in History – I dunno, they’re all a bit dodgy.
Tattoo (If you don’t have one, what would you get?) The reason I don’t have any is because unfortunately I am too indecisive. I ain’t about to suddenly get decisive. My girlfriend has nice tattoos, I like those.
