Exclusive Interview: Dyssidia’s Cory David talks new album, Electric Eye, and the band’s future

As Dyssidia prepares for their much-anticipated return to Perth, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Cory, the band’s guitarist, for an in-depth chat about their journey, new music, and the excitement surrounding their upcoming Electric Eye festival performance. After a few technical hiccups (yes, blackouts included), we dived into a discussion that gave us a sneak peek into the band’s creative process and what’s next for the Adelaide-based progressive metal outfit.

Dissidia’s Return: “It’s been about five years.”

When asked about their time in Perth, Cory reflected on their last visit: “I think it’s been about five years since we were last here. We were over a few times before that, but it’s been a while. Last time was before the latest album.”

And that album, “Costly Signals”, released right at the start of the pandemic in March 2020, has left a lasting mark. Yet, for Dyssidia, the timing couldn’t have been more challenging. “We released it just before COVID hit. So, yeah, it was a bit of a nightmare. But we’re back and ready to play for you all again.”

New Music on the Horizon: A Sneak Peek

While fans are still enjoying Costly Signals, Cory shared some exciting news: Dyssidia has been quietly working on a new album. Though the specifics are still under wraps, the band has been in the studio, meticulously crafting a follow-up to their previous release.

“We’ve been working on it for a few years now. It’s in the final mixing stages, so it’s sounding fantastic. Sam Valen from Caligula’s Horse is handling the mixing, and he’s brought some awesome touches to the record. We’re really excited about it.”

Expect an official announcement soon, but Cory teased that the album will likely drop early to mid-2024. Electric Eye festival attendees will even get a preview of what’s to come: “We’ll be debuting a new song at the festival,” he shared, adding that they’re keeping the rest under wraps for now.

Progressive Metal That Defies Boundaries

Describing Dyssidia’s sound is no easy task, but Cory gave it a shot. “Progressive metal fits, but it’s such a broad genre. We aim for big, dramatic themes, and our music is usually intense. It’s not as laid-back as some progressive bands—it’s more on the intense side of the spectrum.”

The band draws influence from giants like Opeth and Dream Theater, and you can hear those inspirations in their intricate compositions. Cory’s guitar work stands out, showcasing a unique blend of classical training and modern metal influences. “I try to build melodies and solos that feel more like they could be played by a vocalist or even a violin, rather than just traditional guitar licks,” he explained.

Electric Eye Festival: Who’s on Pete’s Watchlist?

Electric Eye is just around the corner, and Cory’s excitement is palpable. “I’m really looking forward to playing again in Perth. It’s going to be awesome sharing the stage with bands like Psycroptic, Soldusk, and Crypt Crawler.” When asked who he’s most excited to see perform, Cory quickly answered, “Probably Soldusk this time. I saw them at Blacken a couple of years ago, and they were incredible.”

The festival promises to be an unforgettable experience for progressive metal fans, and Dyssidia’s set is sure to be a highlight, especially with the new material on display.

Advice for Aspiring Musicians

For those just starting out in the music scene, Cory offered some sage advice: “Follow your gut instinct. Don’t overthink what people like or what’s trendy. Stick to your guns and focus on being creative with what truly inspires you. That’s what keeps the music genuine.”

It’s clear that Cory’s approach to music is one of passion and authenticity, which has kept Dyssidia pushing forward in an ever-evolving metal scene.

What’s Next for Dissidia?

With a new album on the way and live shows lining up, the future looks bright for Dyssidia. “The main goal is to keep making music that resonates with people and to keep the momentum going. We’ve been working so hard on this album, and we’re really proud of it. After that, maybe we’ll try to speed up the next one a bit!”

As Dyssidia gets ready to take the stage at Electric Eye on October 5th, fans can expect an energetic, intense performance—complete with new music that will only build on their impressive legacy. If you’re in Perth, don’t miss it!

Catch Dyssidia at Electric Eye Festival, October 5th. Tickets are still available! Stay tuned for updates on their new album, expected in early 2025.
