Shaquira: Hi, Dave Shaquira from Amnplify. How are you today?
Dave: Hi. Good, thanks Shaquira. Sorry, I couldn’t answer the call a minute ago. I mean, if we ran outta time, maybe we should call back. I’ve got another one in like in 10 minutes. Sorry about that.

Shaquira: That’s alright. I’ve only got a couple of questions to ask you.  So I will be quick.  all right, so let’s get straight into it. 2021 was 40 years together. Huge accomplishment. How do you feel how far you’ve come since 1981?
Dave: You did a couple short ones Did you <laugh> um, uh, look, obviously we’re incredibly proud of, of what we’ve achieved. Um, and it’s still at the same time, we’re still kind of like hungry to see what else there is discover about what we’ve been doing and what we wanna do and making a new record was part of that, you know, um, we had still new musical ideas to explore and, and we’re still just as desperately excited by music and, you know, kind of tragically compelled to do it as we ever were. So,.

Shaquira: And you mentioned new album, chariot of gods. How did that come about?
Dave: Well, basically, um, we did, we did it funny this time. We did it a bit like aery first album, fun enough. So it’s in a way it’s sort of an echo about beginning 40 years ago or 30 something years. Um, in that we did it as a series of singles rather than, you know, doing demos and then getting all the tracks together and then, you know, sitting around and saying, okay, now this is gonna to the album, unless we record these ones all at once. You know, we, we went in and, and set up the drums and, you know, recorded a couple of tracks and then, you know, packed it all up again. And a few months later went back and didn’t another single and the same way.
And, and it, it sort of evolved a bit more organically in a sense because we weren’t trying to, um, you know, keep them all consistent. We just let the, you know, the drum sounds and the different spaces and different, even the different, you know, time we were in to kind of like, sort of in, in the sense influence those particular songs at that time, rather than tie them all into one big creative, you know, push.

Shaquira: So what would you say set this album apart from the other ones that you’ve released?
Dave: Well, the first thing obviously is we have a new drum and Nick, Nick REA, um, and that has been a, a big change to our band. <Laugh>. Yeah. So, so, um, so Nick joining the band has changed things quite significantly because, you know, he’s got a kind of, um, style to his drumming and has added a different sort of swing to our sound. Yeah. So that’s a big thing. Um, and you know, and, and also, you know, after all these years, I’ve, I’ve really, it’s become very obvious to me that when you have any change of personnel in the band, it really does profoundly change the band’s overall personality, even though we’re still always, you know, people say, it sounds the hu guru is, and, and I can sort of understand that, but, um, you know, there is a different kind of nuance to it for us and, and, um, you know, the new energy we, Nick is quite, um, fresh for us.
It’s, um, bit of a renewal really. I almost called it a reboot. <laugh>.

.

.

Shaquira: Nice. And what would you say your favorite song from this album is?
Dave: Well, I don’t have a favorite song, but I, I, I always like to point to the song, um, don’t try and save my soul, um, because it’s kind of specifically about me and, and I mean, all, all the songs about me that I write, but that song, I’m actually literally sort of telling, you know, the story of what I’m doing on this earth and how am I, you know, at least in terms of music and how I’m kind of compelled to do it. And I’m sort of resigned to that fate now. <laugh> just, even if I wanted to do something else, I really couldn’t, because I just recognize the fact that that’s what I, what, who I am and what I am. Yeah. And why I am.

Shaquira: It’s your life.
Dave: It is, you know? Um, and also, you know, it’s some of, it’s also a bit about, you know, personality as well and you know, and my search for, uh, love and acceptance and uh, you know, where do I fit in? And that sort of, there’s some, you know, some, if not answers and certainly, um, as I said, resignation, <laugh> in my, my approach to, to uh, you know, my seeking.

Shaquira: And you’re about to go on your 40th anniversary tour, And it’s been postponed 2021 and 2022. So how are you feeling about finally getting there?
Dave: Postponed Yeah. Tomorrow night’s our first show.

We’re not, well, I’m not crossing any roads. Um, you know, well actually I nearly got myself, you know, funnily enough. I nearly got killed cross the road only a few days ago last week.

Shaquira: Oh my, not good.
Dave: It was crazy. I mean, I, we’ve been very sort as I say a little bit spooked because you know, all these things have gone wrong and it’s like, you know, will this happen? And I, I take it actually as a positive sign cause I didn’t actually get hit by the car, but cuz it came slow, damn close. He went through a, ran a red light and I was a pedestrian and mesh knee literally about two inches. And if I’d been, if it had been one second, uh, later I probably would’ve been in this middle of that bonnet and gone flying and maybe, you know, being killed, but it was very, very close. And so I thought, well, it didn’t hit me this time.
So I think maybe it will happen. <laugh>.

Shaquira: You’re very lucky.
Dave: <Laugh> well, I definitely think I’m lucky. That’s for sure after that one, cuz that was insane. That was insane.
There was a couple of, you know, there’s a car, one line of cars were stopped. I didn’t realize other line was completely empty and this car just came barreling through and poor boy, you know, it was so close.

Shaquira: That’s scary. so, any regrets during your career?
Dave: Millions of them, of course, you know who couldn’t, um, you know, things like I regret things, other people have done that work that could have been done better and I regret things that I’ve done that could have been done better and you know, uh, it’s, it’s, you know, it’s a, obviously anything, any life’s the learning curve and uh, you didn’t, you didn’t, uh, start out, you know, being full apprised of what you, what you’d later come to realize, you know? So you, uh, discover things about yourself and other people on the way that you wish you’d always known, but um, you had to learn the hard way.

.

.

Shaquira: Fair enough. And if you could have your fans, remember you by one thing, what would it be?
Dave: Uh, by one thing? Well obviously the music, yeah. That’s that’s elder matters, you know, in the long run and you know, they do already. So we’re not worried about that. You know, we have songs, our songs seem to have kept, um, you know, sort of circulating around the, the, uh, cosmos for quite a while without, um, you know, sounding like irrelevant or, you know, you know, quite as popular as ever in many ways. So, um, we are kind of feeling pretty confident that we are not gonna just completely, um, you know, disappear as soon as we stop tweeting the balls that the songs will disappear as well. I think the songs are out there and we are just, uh, you know, we just,.
just saying that, you know, what the songs, you know, in a sense, the songs will outlive us and, and you know, we, we get here, we are here now interpreting them and you know, and showing people how they are for us, but the songs have their own lives and they’ve, you know, people have taken into, into their lives and they’ve, you know, in a sense associated their own, um, experiences with them and enriched them with, with those things that, you know, the way they relate to their lives, that becomes a, you know, a personal thing to them. And, you know, as much as I like to think this is my song and I wrote it and it means this, some songs take on a different sort of nuance when, when they are applied to someone else’s experiences.
And that’s, that’s, what’s beautiful about art. It’s, it’s, it’s a personal interpretation. And, um, you know, I, I don’t blame these particular, you know, priority for my specific circumstances over that, you know, someone else’s, um, experience might be deeper and more on even, uh, more profound for particular lyric or, or musical, you know, theme that I’ve created. Sorry about that sounds a bit. That sounds a bit airy fairy.

Shaquira: No, That’s okay.
I got one more question and then I’ll let you go. So you can make your next interview.
Dave: Okay.

Shaquira: If you were stuck on an island with one other musician, who would you choose? It can be anyone.
Dave: One other musician, boy, like boy, um, I presuming that they’ve got an instrument. They can play that wouldn’t be, you know, have to be done with pedal power or, uh, you know, wind power, something that’s actually electronic or acoustic, you know, like a I’ll go with, um, gee, I’ll go with umm, gee, I’ll go Bark. And, and he, as long as he’s got a pipe organ to play a good old church organ, we’ll have  Sebastian bark, I think cause uh, he is one of the greatest musicians of all time and a profound musical intellect.
And what do you think just he could do with just on a, on an organ is just, you see his, his organ works were just insane. You know, he wouldn’t need an orchestra, you know? I mean Mozart, you’d play Mozart as well, but he, he only played the Veiola mostly. So yeah. I get sick of hearing one veiola , but a pipe, a pipe organ with Bark playing it. I’d never get sick of that.

Shaquira: Lovely. All right. Well thank you so much for your time today.
Dave: No worries. Thank you.

Shaquira: I hope you have a lovely rest of your day and enjoy your tour.
Dave: Thank You very much. Cheers. Good on you. Thank you.
