Sydney pop-indie singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, David Taylor, is one of Australia’s most promising young artists. At 21 years young, David already has an impressive musical resume and it’s only about to grow as he prepares to release his new single, “Battered” – a track that, even before it’s released, has already been shortlisted for the 2019 Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition alongside other formidable nominees including Dean Lewis, Morgan Evans, Matt Corby, The Veronicas and more.

For any new fans, how did it all begin? When did you discover your love of playing and performing music?
I’ve always had a love for performing, ever since I was young. I was always putting on shows in my living room for family members, and was in choirs in school. I just always saw myself being on stage.
Which musicians have inspired you?
Some of my favourites are John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Robbie Williams and The Beatles. So a very vast array of artists.
What makes your sound unique? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I love being able to tell a story and spread a message through my music. Hopefully people are able to connect to my songs through with their own personal experiences.
You write your own music so could you tell us about the process? Does it come easily?
There is no real ‘set process’ for me, I just write about whatever I’m feeling at the time, or sometimes I’ll come up with a really cool chord and melodic structure that I enjoy and start with that. Sometimes I’ll be able to write 1-2 songs a day, and others I won’t be able to write anything for weeks, which can be very frustrating.
Your new song ‘Battered’ is very emotional. What does it mean to you?
“Battered” is a song about the entrapment of being in an abusive relationship and not having the strength to leave. This doesn’t necessarily have to be physically, it can be emotional entrapment as well.
How do you think songs about these significant issues can make a difference?
Hopefully these songs are able to connect with people whom are going through similar experiences and let them know that there are others out there going through the same thing, and that it’s okay to talk to people and letting them know that they’re not alone.
.
.
How is your upcoming music different to your first album ‘Thoughts then Reality’? What did you learn from that experience?
In my first album ‘Thoughts Then Reality’ I was experiencing with multiple sounds and genres trying to find the right one for me. A lot of the songs I wrote on there are also very innocent lyrically due to my age at the time of writing them. My new songs I believe I have found the sound and direction I want to take my music in, and found a maturity to my lyrics.
You’ve been a big advocate of mental health and the charity KYDS. What made you decide to become so involved? Is there anything you would like to bring awareness to now?
I am passionate about my work with mental health and brining awareness, especially KYDS. Mental illness is something I’ve struggled with personally as well as many friends and family members. I’ve been lucky to have an amazing support network behind me to help me through my darker times, but not everyone is so fortunate; which is why organisations like KYDS are so valuable. My goal was to help raise awareness and let people know that it’s okay to not be okay, and to reach out and talk to someone.
If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, whom would you pick and why? (Dead or Alive)
Robbie Williams. An odd choice I’m sure. I’ve seen Robbie perform live every time he’s been in Sydney since I was a kid. The way he manages to control the stage and capsulate an audience astounds me and I am so incredibly in awe of his performing ability, and he is a performer I truly aspire to be like.
What are you hoping to achieve in the future?
In the future I am to keep putting out music, touring and connecting with more fans all over the world spreading my messages and songs.
