Dear Sunday

.

Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you start writing music?
Yeah, as long as I can remember!
I still find it hard to comprehend that people actually listen to the things we write as mates, pinch myself knowing that one day it could be our full time jobs.
My sister played guitar in primary school, so I did what every younger sibling did and followed in her footsteps, But if I think about the first song I ever wrote, I was about 12.

Which music did you grow up listening to? How has it influenced your current style?
I listened to a lot of what my parents would listen to growing up as most kids do. They listened to a lot of Queen, Earth Wind and Fire etc. But I used to listen to a lot of rap believe it or not. Honestly, it used to go from Folk to Hip Hop – Ben Howard, to Tupac. So I guess the diversity of what I listened to is probably how that diverse,  ‘Dear Sunday’ sound came about.

How would you describe your sound?
This is a tricky one and one we’ve never really been able to give a straight up answer for. We’ve been told we have that ‘Ocean Alley’ sort physc rock sound, but then again just recently released a Drum and Bass track with ‘LUUDE’.
Pretty much I think the lack of direction, or the lack of trying to sound a certain way has just given the sound of ‘Dear Sunday’.
We just write what we think sounds cool haha.

Why do you think people will resonate with your music?
I think the transparency of us as people and as a band makes us really relatable to most people. Hopefully the music just speaks for itself and people can relate what they’re going through with it.

Your new single Teleport has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
So the track started when I was at work, digging and slaving away where I came up with that vocal hook ‘I wanna teleport with you’ and quickly chucked it into my voice memos. We all pretty much caught up that afternoon and the song was written.
I’ve always had this vision of talking to a future partner, hearing her say shes over living here and wants to run away. That’s where that ‘and I remember so clearly, you said you didn’t want to stay’ verse comes from.
I think the whole Covid and lack of travel has been playing on my subconscious.

Do you have any more new music in the works?
Of course we dooooo, we’re always writing new tracks.
We probably have another 15 – 20 songs that are half or fully done, we just need to find the time between working full time to get in the studio.
Hypothetically we might have some cheeky collabs coming up soon as well, were only just getting started.

What can audiences expect from your upcoming WA shows?
Our shows are always pretty wild, and we’ve got a few new songs we are looking forward to showing everyone.
For some reason we tend to swap instruments when were jamming or practicing. So never know, might see the boys giving that a crack.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
That’s a tricky one, I’d probably say Jimi Hendrix. Would love to hear some of those lead lines in a DS song.

What’s next for you in the near future?
We’re about to go on a little WA tour, but still would love to head over east and play some shows over there.
We’ve got heaps of songs to record and some cheeky collabs in the works, so dont worry youll be hearing a lot more of us very soon.

What are your longer-term aspirations?
Would love to do music full time, and maybe one day even start producing other artists. Would just love to be playing shows with the boys and keep doing what were doing.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
Definitely watching people you don’t even know sing songs you’ve written. Blows my mind everytime.
