Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you start writing music?
I have always made up my own songs and poems. It has taken me a really long time to actually realise I could do this seriously. I think I tried to start a band when I was 8 but we just didn’t have the commitment to rehearsals. The first serious song I wrote was when I was about 15 and it was about Ophelia from Hamlet. Very dramatic and VERY LONG!

Why is an Aussie girl in London? Are the opportunities greater there?
I was studying Opera singing in Brisbane and it didn’t quite feel right, so I had a lesson with a man who turned out to be the head of Mountview in London. He offered me a place to come and study over here so 10 years ago I moved over with my leotard and tap shoes! To be honest I have only ever worked in the UK so couldn’t say much to whether the opportunities are better.

Which music did you grow up listening to? How has it influenced your current style?
I still know The Cranberries’ No Need To Argue’ album off by heart. Also The Crash Test Dummies, Kate Bush, Tori Amos. Then as I got older I got in to Regina Spektor, Kate Miller Heidke. And then IMOGEN HEAP! I think there are elements of these artists in my music. I definitely am drawn to individual artists who aren’t afraid to express their own style!

How would you describe your sound and why do you think people resonate with your music?
One of my favourite quotes is from a brilliant writer called Hazel Gale who is a really supporter of my music. She said…“It’s a rare thing to find music that speaks so directly from (and to) the heart.” I think that’s my main aim! I hope that people are able to connect to my music because it resonates with something inside of them. I like to call it whimsical folk-pop (or Folk Whimsy). I love fairytales and mythology and so I think a lot of my songs are stories. There are few comedy numbers thrown in too (Susan being one of them)!

Your second single “Susan” has just been released and is apparently about your alter ego! Describe its origin and evolution. Is this alter ego a permanent thing, or created just for this single?
Susan was born after a little too much prossecco. She has been around for years and is my alter ego/imaginary best friend. She appears mainly on big nights out and has become a bit of a running joke in my friendship circle. She hasn’t been seen much lately and I wanted to write a song for her.

Do you have any more new music in the works?
Yes! We have loads of music and next year is gonna be the year we release some more singles and an album!

.

Do you have any shows/tours coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I have a big show on the 20th of February at the Camden Chapel in London. I cannot wait. It is going to be a night of Ebony Buckle Folk Whimsy and I will be joined by my beautiful band. You can get tickets here

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I would LOVE to sing in Imogen Heap’s band! I saw her live a few months ago and it blew me away. The way she has combined technology with emotion is brilliant.

What’s next for you in the near future?
Well the SUSAN MUSIC VIDEO is coming out soon. And then we are getting to work on our album…using the platform Patreon to fundraise. Patreon subscribers will get a song/month from the album. We are also going to release a few singles!

What are your longer-term aspirations?
I want to tour the world and play at festivals and be in more plays and work in film and TV. And I think as a person I want to try to live as true to myself as possible and to keep learning and growing and developing my art.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
I love being able to connect with people. To share something and to know that they are feeling it. I also love making people laugh…my stage chat is sometimes referred to as very awkward stand up.
