EDDIE SPAGHETTI
from
SUPERSUCKERSInterview with Dan Gray
Dan: All right. Yesterday we had Nashville Pussy. Today we’ve got the Super Suckers. I think it’s a dynamic duo for sure. What do you think, Eddie?
Eddie: Yeah for sureDan: We just need some Willie Nelson now
Eddie: That’s right. We doDan: All right. I’ve got a fun icebreaker question for you, Eddie. What would your perfect day look like, if you could say it in 30 seconds or less, what would be your perfect day?
Eddie: Boy, I don’t know, just wake up whenever I want and have a low impact, no stress kind of day. It’s the best kind of days I can have. And I’m lucky I have a lot of them because I get to do music for a living, you know, so it’s a nice low stress impact lifeDan: Yeah, I’d say you’re like an incredibly lucky person to be able to play music as a career. Like that’s like a dream for so many people
Eddie: Yeah, it’s not easy. It’s a struggle. It’s definitely not for everybody. And it gets harder all the time with every new technological advancementDan: Yeah, I what you mean. The landscape has completely changed. So taking yourself back to as a young person, what do you think was a first song that you interacted with that really inspired you as a young person?
Eddie: The very first song that did it for me was a song called My Sharona by a band called The Knack. This was in 1979 maybe. I still love that song. I actually did a cover of it recently, kind of over COVID. I did a cover of it with a Buddy of mine. It came out really goodDan: Awesome, so what would you say is the feature that you love so much about that song
Eddie: Well, I don’t know, I just like the way the whole thing, the way it starts with the drums, the way the guitars come in and play that, and then it explodes and just, does everything a rock song should do.Dan: Yeah, for sure. So you’ve been in a band since 1988. Has anything inspired you in particular to keep playing after all these years? Like you said it’s difficult to travel to places like Australia, which is far away. Has anything in particular kept you in the game?
Eddie: Well, I think probably the lack of real tangible success.
You know, I think that just keeps us hungry and keeps us trying to get more people to realise that what we do is just as good as all the other bands that have it so easy and make millions of dollars doing it. You know, we’re just as good as the Foo Fighters. We’re way better than U2, you know, we’ll smoke Coldplay. But these are the bands that people decide are popular. I don’t know why. I’ll take Pearl Jam any day.Dan: Yeah, I know what you mean. For some bands, it’s always frustrating that they’re that good and they just don’t get the recognition they deserve. But to some degree, they also do get recognition because like the fans seem to be really hardcore for those bands that aren’t as popular.
Eddie: Yeah, I feel like that what we do for whatever reason, it just isn’t for everybody. It’s for people that have really put their nose in the rock and roll and have dug past all the surface and are really digging deep. You know, I guess that’s, it’s good because, you know, it’s for people that really know about rock and roll music. Not for the ridge consumer of whatever, you know, it’s, it’s for connoisseurs of qualityDan: And I saw yesterday your experience with Willie Nelson playing, was that back in the nineties or two thousands when you played with him on American television?
Eddie: Yeah it was 97 maybe 98.Dan: That was really incredible. I was born in 97.
Eddie: How about that?Dan: But do have any other great stories like that? Like collaboration stories where you’ve hung out with artists and gone to play and it’s turned out really good?
Eddie: Well, that one was particularly funny because when we got there, before getting there, I had been with Willie before and I knew what happens with Willie Nelson. You smoke a bunch of pot and you get all out of your head and you can’t do anything. So I told myself before that day, I was like, whatever you do, don’t smoke pot with Willie Nelson. Just don’t do it. It’s a bad idea. So we did sound check and sound check went horribly. It was like, he was like messing up on purpose almost. It was so bad. And he took off his guitar and he looks at me. He’s like, Hey, let’s go burn one. And I was like, okay. It took me like, you know, one second to go back on everything. I had told myself I shouldn’t do. And so we’re on the bus and you know, getting stoned and all of sudden there’s a knock at the door and I had completely forgotten what we were there to do. I completely forgot that we were there to do the Tonight Show in front of all these millions of people that are gonna be watching. And it all came rushing back to me what we had to go do and how terrible it was about to be. And I was just like, God. So we went up there and we did it and we nailed it. It was awesome. And I just could not believe it. I was so thrilled.Dan: Yeah, that’s super special. What was the feeling when you were walking out stoned about to play after the bus, what was that feeling?
Eddie: Panic. Sheer unadulterated panic. Just like, I’m about to go up there and destroy Willie Nelsons song in front of all these millions of people and it’s just going to be awful. And we’re going to, that’s going to be our legacy. We’re the band that was terrible on the Tonight Show with Willie Nelson. It didn’t happen, was great.Dan: That’s so good. So, you know, you’ve said in interviews, band members of Super Suckers have come and gone and, you know, you’ve been a member for a long time. Has your idea of success changed of your career? Like you said, like, you you’re motivated by trying to show the value that you have compared to popular bands, but yeah, has success, the idea of success changed for you compared to when you first started?
Eddie: For sure. You know, when we first started this band, we thought, you know, we’re going to be as big as Van Halen, you know, playing arenas and, enjoying all the trappings of rock star success. And it didn’t happen. And then all of a sudden you find yourself on this journey, which is really the destination, you know the whole cheesy thing, the journey is the destination. It really is for us. And for me, especially as an artist, you know, I enjoy making up these songs. I still have them, they’re still in me and they still gotta come out. So I’m grateful for that. And yeah, I definitely, feel like our success, even though I could be so much more successful. I do feel like our career and our band has been a successful thing.Dan: Yeah, for sure. Like, even when you have select fans, just showing how much they care about your music, like, that is definitely success in so many ways.
Eddie: For sure, and I appreciate those fans. And like I said, what we do just doesn’t happen to be for everybody. You just have to kind of be comfortable with that.Dan: So I noticed a new album recently. What are like some important lessons you’ve learned over the years in making albums? And like in terms of this new album, what’s like some important lessons you’re trying to implement this time around?
Eddie: Well, I feel like we really have kind of gotten the whole idea of making a record down. You know, the last four or five records that we’ve made all sound great, they are all really well produced. We’ve done great jobs on them. We did them all ourselves and they just sound great. So I’m really proud of that. And I feel like, you it’s going to keep on doing it. Maybe one day somebody’s going to notice.Dan: Yeah, the process is like quite clear for you guys. Anything in particular you’re looking forward to about heading back to Australia? how do you think fans differ across the world from where you’ve been?
Eddie: Well, our band tends to do well in certain places, that place that had a similar sort of energy. Spain, Australia, Texas, Southern California, these are really where we do the best. there’s a similar vibe in all of those areas, I don’t know, it’s sort of a rebellious spirit that everybody has in those, those localities that just, I love it. And it’s the kind of the imagery that I play with a lot in our songs. So its cool.Dan: Yeah. So anywhere like say Spain, America, Australia, where else have you been as a band anywhere really cool?
Eddie: Well, recently got to go to Hawaii and we’ve been to Alaska. So I think we’ve been to all 50 states and we’ve been to Sweden. We went to Greece recently, which was really cool. We had never been there. And Brazil, that’s funDan: South America would be really cool for a tour I can imagine, Okay, so you’ve played with Eddie Vedder, Willie Nelson, who else are some big musical icons that that you would love to collaborate with?
Eddie: Well, we did some things with Steve Earl. That was really great as well. I enjoy, you know, when we get to go on tour with bands that aren’t so popular, but have really great artists in them like Electric Six or The Hangman, The Dwarves. These are bands that I enjoy and love to collaborate with as well. So it’s not all the big names that get my, you know, get my blood pumping. It’s all the little guys like myself that I respect and love.Dan: Okay, I’ve got a couple of final questions before we go into some fun, some fun questions to finish off. Like you’ve worked with heaps of musicians over your career and you’ve also gone through some health challenges that I’ve found out. What wisdom do you have for people that are facing like, I guess, adversity and challenges in life? Like, do you have any wisdom around that?
Eddie: If you’re going through hell, keep going. That’s all you can do. Eventually you’ll get out the other side of it. It’s different for everybody. I didn’t want to wind up being the poster child for cancer or whatever. But I don’t mind talking about it. It’s something that happened and it’s just, you it doesn’t define me. I’m not like defined by the fact that I had cancer. You know, it’s just something that happened. And I’m really grateful to have gotten through it. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. It’s just an experience that happened, but it doesn’t define you. Yeah.Dan: Alright, well that’s it for the main questions, but we’ve got some fun questions just to finish off, just some short answer questions. If you could, yeah, try to keep your answers as succinct as possible for these, that would be great. Alright, so these are some ones that your fans really, I think, find interesting. So what is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Eddie: Start a band and move to Seattle.Dan: Okay, what is the one topic you can talk about for hours? It can’t be music.
Eddie: Can’t be music? Ice cream.Dan: What is your favourite thing about your bandmates?
Eddie: The fact that they’re just the coolest. These guys that I have now make the band so cool and they’re just, they’re like cold water. They’re just so fucking cool. I just love them to death. Yeah, unaffected and at ease with life. No stress. There’s no drama. Everything’s just easy. All the decisions are really easy and quick to make with these guys. It’s literally, it’s a dream.Dan: That’s amazing. Favourite album?
Eddie: Highway to Hell, ACDC.Dan: Nice. Favourite artist?
Eddie: ACDC.Dan: Favourite movie?
Eddie: Tie between Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski.Dan: Yeah, nice. Favourite place to visit in the world?
Eddie: Spain, Barcelona.Dan: Favourite venue to play in the world.
Eddie: Big one with lots of peopleDan: Do you have a favourite tattoo?
Eddie: Yeah, I have two favourite tattoos. I have this one that my son drew. Looks like Japanese writing or something. And this one that my daughter drew. This is a potato man.Dan: That’s nice. That’s a great family activity haha.
Eddie: I just wait for their doodles to look like something to put on my body.Dan: All right. Well, thanks so much for your time, Eddie. Really appreciate the chat. Have a great rest of your day and might catch you around at a show soon.
Eddie: All right, man. Thanks for helping us spread the word. I appreciate it. All good, mate. All the best. Peace out.Follow SUPERSUCKERS

The SUPERPUSSY TOUR
NASHVILLE PUSSY
& the
SUPERSUCKERS
on the one bill!Featuring two of the greatest current American Rock n Roll bands the world has to offer… this is gunna be one Helluva HoeDown Under.
THE SUPERSUCKERS and NASHVILLE PUSSY are ready to rip Australia a new one over the long weekend in late January, 2025.
THE SUPERSUCKERS will start the party in SYDNEY & ADELAIDE, with NASHVILLE PUSSY headlining both of these shows. Then, in MELBOURNE & BRISBANE, NASHVILLE PUSSY will open the shows, while SUPERSUCKERS take the headlining reins. Get ready Aus…
NASHVILLE PUSSY rocked our socks off with their sold out shows on their 2022 Aussie tour, including being the last band EVER to play the iconic Frankies in Sydney – which had well over 5000 people lining the streets of Sydney’s CBD attempting to get into the club to witness the closing of the venue and Nashville Pussy!!! Was a raucous Rock n Roll night, one for the history books.
Raised on a diet of Marshall stacks, Gibson Guitars, Jack Daniels and weed, NASHVILLE PUSSY is the bastard offspring of foul-mouthed, demented, hillbilly, ice-cream man Blaine Cartwright and tractor driving, nude art school model and guitar prodigy Ruyter Suys.
Born deep in the Baptist Bible Belt of Kentucky, USA – Blaine Cartwright used the sounds of The Ramones and The New York Dolls to maintain sanity. Meanwhile in Vancouver, Canada, 8 year-old, hippie kid, Ruyter Suys picked up her father’s guitar and started playing along with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix.
“We got married on a dare, after dropping acid… Nashville Pussy is our baby,” says Suys.
“If there’s been a better band than Nashville Pussy to open for Motörhead, I’ve never heard them” – Lemmy
So, take it from The Man Australia… DON’T MISS OUT ON NASHVILLE PUSSY (appropriately) DOWN UNDER!
THE SUPERSUCKERS are an American rock band, formed in 1988, whose music ranges from Alternative Rock to Country Rock to Cowpunk. Described as “the bastard sons of Foghat, AC/DC, and ZZ Top after being weaned on punk rock, unafraid of massive guitar riffs, outsized personalities, or pledging allegiance to sex, weed, and Satan with a wink and a nudge” – AllMusic
Having had a long and colourful career with some Alt Hit singles along the way like ‘Born With A Tail’ which received heavy airplay in Australia, THE SUPERSUCKERS return to Australia after their last tour had multiple sell out shows along the way. These legends of Cowpunk have a huge following here in Australia, and these shows are sure to pack out.
On occasion, The ‘suckers have even had some of their legendary mates, such as Willie Nelson and Eddie Vedder out the front singing – and who could blame Willie and Eddie for wanting to join in the ruckus!
THE SUPERSUCKERS consist of the rockin’’ trio Eddie Spaghetti, Metal Marty Chandler and Christopher “Chango” von Streicher. We can’t wait to welcome them back to Australia in January 2025, for one hell of a hot ride with Nashville Pussy.
