Today we sit down and chat with Nickrod Vatandoust, a Sydney based hip pop artist otherwise known as Envee. As a relatively new outfit to come out of Parrramatta with a debut E.P dropping in the coming months, Envee chats to us about his new found project and his collaborations with award winning producer Sam Antony.

It’s a pleasure to have you here, thanks for taking the time to chat with us today. So walk us through Envee… You all obviously have a great passion for music and are all heavily involved in the creative process. Tell us about how the project came about?
Hey! Its an absolute pleasure to be here, thank you so much for having me, so I started writing this project around June 2018 when I was living in South London and writing music is something I have always done since the age of 11. At the time I wasn’t feeling like me, I was away from my family and I was going through some tough times so I started writing lyrics about my emotions and little by little after going through my songs that I wrote, I realised I was just writing about my life. Then something happened around December that changed my life, if you hear the track on the EP called Life of ENVEE, you’ll know what im talking about I wont give away any spoilers, that just made me say, I cant live like this anymore, things have to change, I’m going to write an album by the end of 2019 and it’s going to be the best thing anyone’s ever heard in Australia. So I literally got to work as soon as it hit 12am on the first of January 2019. I produced concept after concepts of instrumentals for the songs I had already written, I wrote lyrics after lyrics, I literally turned into a freak with one goal in his mind, to be the best artist not only in Australia, but I want it to be known worldwide.
What acts would be on your road trip playlist that inspired you to head down the line?
A lot of rap that tells stories so a lot of Eminem, lupe fiasco, drake but one artist I could go the whole trip just listening to on repeat is J. Cole. That man is a king in my eyes, he is my absolute role model and honestly he was one of the biggest reasons that made me say okay I want to change lives with my music, I could go years just listening to Cole world. It would be a dream to collaborate on a track with him one day, an absolute dream come true.
Your brand new E.P ‘LIFE OF ENVEE’ gives the listener a pretty good indication of what you’re about. Can you tell us what the music means to you and who if any are the main songwriters?
This EP is literally the gift of life to myself, because it truly saved me. I was in darkness and this EP brought light to my life, I am the only songwriter on this album I don’t know it doesn’t feel right to me that 1. You call yourself a lyricist and have other people write for you and 2. This album is LIFE OF ENVEE, and no one knows ENVEE better than I do. That guy is wild, but his heart is set on one thing and that’s helping people find light and pure happiness within themselves. Oh my days and the music is so damn good as well, it’s seriously special, different, I don’t know if people have heard something like this in a while, something so relatable, so amazing, something that brings your soul to peace and then makes you jump like you’ve never jumped before. This EP is literally just emotion. Feel things, have fun, love life, love the fact that you’re able to feel happy, there’s so much beauty in pain because it can inspire you to do things you’d never think you could do.
The first release from this E.P titled ‘Kinda Funny’ is due for release on Friday the 24th January. Was this a stand out track for you to release as the first single? What has the feedback been so far to those who have heard it?
The song “Kinda Funny” has been on a journey itself, the lyrics just poured out of me, however the instrumental needed a lot of work. And I mean like a lot, it got to the point where in the early stages of this album, I started working with some people who were really negative about my music and my whole vision as an artist and they were telling me Kinda Funny is the weakest song on the album and that I should scrap it. Literally at that point I knew I had to move on from those people. Scrap a song that not only had so much potential but was literally my life experiences? That didn’t sit right with me. I went home practically in tears, ready to just move on from this album business when my brother just casually strolls into the room and says, just call Sam. Sam Antony ladies and gentlemen is the reason why Kinda Funny sounds as amazing as it does. Sam Antony, I don’t even know how to describe this man’s talent but he is a mad genius. After we were finished mixing and recording we just knew we created a monster track together, we have showed at least a little over 200 people this track and I’m yet to find a negative opinion. I look for that as well, I don’t want you to gas me up and tell me how good the track is, I wanna know what’s wrong with it, no one can find what’s wrong with it yet.
Do you generally write about past experiences? Take us through the writing procedure and how it all gels together?
It really just depends on what im feeling and how im feeling to be honest. I carry a note pad and pen with me literally everywhere I go and I write whatever I feel, or sometimes lines just pop into my head and I write them down. Some songs on this EP I, I can’t really explain, “life of envee” the track I wrote in 15 minutes in a hotel room and by far its my most emotional track, personally my favourite song on the album, but like “Piano for her” took me literally months only because I re wrote the song about 20 times. I would write a draft thinking this is the one, then all of a sudden I hated the verses I wrote, so I re wrote it. For some reason I couldn’t get it right until finally I did. Sometimes I write a verse and I think, that’s the best shit, can I swear? Sorry, best verse I’ve ever written and then I just leave it thinking that verse took the life out of me, if I continue writing anymore its just going to be bad energy and lazy writing, so ill finish writing it the next day.
You collaborated with a producer for this debut release. Can you tell us what it was like sharing the creative experience with another person and would you recommend it to others?
I think collaborating with another person was the best thing I ever did, I was lucky because I literally found the best producer in Australia and made him my partner. I recognised Sam Antony’s talent and I didn’t want anyone else to have him this man is absolutely insane with his skill level. He is the 40 to my Drake haha, but absolutely I do recommend collaborating with producers and other artists, only because creating musical art is such a beautiful thing and you never know what you can create when you put your ideas with someone else’s ideas. Sammy and I are literally on the same wave length, we have such a great understanding so it was an honour to share the creative flow with an award winning producer.
And lastly just before we go, Did you have any upcoming gigs and where can we find your music?
Hopefully soon we do, I think we’ll get more information on that later on, I seriously cannot wait to perform this EP for the people only because ENVEE isn’t a one man team, its literally my people and I together, we will dance together, we will sing together and we will smile together. So yeah I cannot wait to give my energy to the people, January 24th my music will be available on all streaming platforms, you can buy the album on I-tunes as well so yeah, really exciting times ahead!
Really great to see new music coming our of Sydney and we look forward to hearing from you in your next release!
Thank you so much I appreciate that, thank you for having me, I hope you guys enjoy LIFE OF ENVEE.
