How did the band come together in Florida back in 2015? Where did it all begin?
Madeline – We started the band during our last year of high school! Tristan and I were studying at a coffee shop and we had the idea to try and start a band and just learn covers for fun. We called up our friend Dillon, who we knew could sing since he used to play bar-gigs around our hometown with his mom, and he was down to try jamming with us. Once we got our chops together a bit from learning covers, we started writing original music and we loved that process. When we played our first “real” show at a venue, we knew from that moment that being in a band was what we wanted to do, so we did everything we could to make that dream a reality!Briefly describe your journey to date.
Madeline – I think our real journey began after we released our second EP, Citrona, in April 2018. We went on our very first tour that year up the east coast of the US, and tried to get the word out about our music as much as we could. With that EP, we were honing in on our sound and realizing what we could create as a band. After we released our third EP, Something You Needed, in 2020, the world hit a standstill with COVID, so we tried everything we could to stay afloat and relevant even though we couldn’t tour. Another huge milestone for us was writing and releasing our first full-length record, Shadowglow, in 2022. We played Bonnaroo Music Festival and Lollapalooza that year, and started to check a bunch of festivals off our band bucket-list. We were able to play overseas for the first time, too! Now, with our second full-length album released, Burnout Days, we’re able to travel overseas again and play in Australia for the first time! We are so excited! Over the past decade, we’ve played hundreds of shows, and we only feel like we’re just starting. It truly feels like we’re living our dream.Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Mitch – Collectively we are inspired by the band Phoenix. A lot of the bands of the 2012-2016 era of indie music as well have been inspirations, just because we grew up on that stuff. You brought out an album ‘Burnout Days’ this year in January. Do you already have another on the drawing board?
Tristan – Yes! Nothing is official or set in stone, as we are quite early on in the process, but we have begun writing again quite recently. You have your first Australian Tour occurring in November/December? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Devon – It’s always exciting playing new places, but the fact that we get the opportunity to play our music for people on the other side of the globe still blows my mind. Excited to explore these cities, meet the people who show up for us, and to give the fans every ounce of energy we have in us on those stages. If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Mitch – Vampire weekend, huge fan of them and their live show is so good. They are top of the game and anyone who has seen them live knows it. After ten years, do you still have long-term aspirations? If yes, what are they, and how are you progressing towards them?
Tristan – We absolutely do – we have a large goal of always trying to write music that feels like a progression from the last release. Some could say it’s the artists’ curse of always never feeling quite good enough, but I think that drive is a healthy one that most artists share. There’s also so many venues and places that we hope our music can bring us to, and to be able to meet the people who hold our music dear in those places. It would also be so cool to score a film as a band, we really try to make music that feels cinematic to us. And selfishly, a big aspiration is to be doing this as long as we can!You have built significant experience now. What piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Dillon – I would say at the beginning say yes to everything and get in front of as many people as you possibly can. Exposure and building a community is everything at the beginning. Later on in your career is when you should be strategically saying no but early on just play out as much as you can. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Dillon – The best thing about performing to a live audience is the energy exchange. You never know how people are receiving the music until you play it live. Hearing a room full of people sing your songs back to you is a very special experience that I feel lucky to have felt in this life. I think the career highlight thus far was opening for Mt. Joy at Red Rocks in 2023. I had never been so nervous in front of a crowd but I have also never felt so incredibly present and in the moment on stage. Now for some quickfire questions to get a little personal:
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Tristan – I’m a big thrillseeker and love doing as many things outdoors as I can, including rock climbing big walls, hiking and backpacking up mountains that are fourteen thousand feet tall and whatever else I can get myself into.
What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? Madeline – My cats! (I have 4)Finally, let’s find out what your current (or all time) favorites are –
