Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you start writing music?
I started going to singing lessons around halfway through primary school & just really got into it, then slowly got into guitar, i had my brothers mate show me a few chords then just picked up the rest practicing with mates in high school and after, but didn’t really start finding my sound writing wise until a few years ago.
Which music did you grow up listening to? How has it influenced your current style?
My mum was into some pretty fruity stuff growing up, around the house I remember Barry Manilow but also a few other different bands like ELO(Electric Light Orchestra) which I still love and draw inspiration from them especially their big swooping harmonies.
How would you describe your sound?
I would say dream pop surf rock with some nostalgic vibes.
Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Instrumentally most of our songs have a natural drive to them, I feel like that’s easy to follow and get into, I like to vocally make our chorus’s big, a little swoopy with the melody, something a little different but also keep that nostalgic vibe.
Your new single ‘Evils?’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
I wrote evils in my backyard at the start of lockdown, in about 2 hours, it just kind of came out naturally. It’s about looking back & how there were times in my life when certain things have happened, losing people close to me & learning how to deal with something like that, and that feeling like you might not be able to get through it when it is happening, but looking back it’s those things that make you who you are today and to not shy away from those feelings but embrace them, and own that shit, even if it feels bad. I never usually write songs like this, they’re usually more about the melody/ vibe and less about real lyrics but I thought I’d make this one a bit more personal for a change.

Do you have any newer music in the works?
Yes! Without spilling too much..But we’ve got new songs ready to go.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Thundercat – play the shaker & do back-up vocals maybe, he’s music is too smooth.
What’s next for you in the near future?
Release a heap of new music and hopefully play shows again soon, see some people.
What are your longer-term aspirations?
To not wear a mask by Christmas would be nice.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
I really like the stage banter with our audiences, I love talking shit and taking the piss outta myself, brings everyone together.

Unveil new single
‘EVILS’
LISTEN HERE
Ballarat lads Gangz have served up another perfect surf-rock tune with the release of ‘Evils’ today.
Speaking about their new single, the band says, “Evils is about embracing all the bad things that have happened in the past and owning them, at the time it feels like you might not be able to get through whatever it is, but now realising that it’s those things that make you who you are today.”
It’s been an exciting 12 months for Gangz after they scored the coveted spot as triple j’s Unearthed feature artist of the week, whilst picking up new audiences through their infectious live shows – including an electrifying set at Spilt Milk, supporting Kingswood and a massive NYE show at The Espy in St Kilda.
Made up of Josh Haire on vocals and guitar, Tim Currie on guitar, Edan Strachan on drums and Colby Cross on bass, Gangz are heavily inspired by anything with swoony vocals and a raw nostalgic feel such as The Strokes, Hockey Dad, A. Swayze & the Ghosts, and Beach House.
Like all musicians in 2020, their touring plans were put on hold due to Covid-19, however they’ve been using this down time to write and record new songs as a follow up to their 2019 debut EP ‘Mid -20’s’. The band are currently donating 100% of their merch sales to the National Justice Project – a non-profit organisation that takes up the fight against institutional discrimination in Australia.
Single: ‘Evils’ is out now through Ditto Music.
