Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
Yep, I’ve always wanted to be a musician. I wrote my first song when I was 8-years-old: a Hank Williams inspired ditty called ‘I’m a Cowgirl’ (a lot has changed since then. Or has it?).

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Melodic, art-pop.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
So many! Aldous Harding, Feist, Sarah Blasko, Phia, Weyes Blood, Father John Misty, Sharon van Etten, Anna Cordell, David Bowie, The Spice Girls. All these artists are immaculate storytellers, have an exquisite sense of melody, and their albums are carefully constructed worlds in-and-of themselves.

Your new single ‘Holding Your Hands Out’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
‘Holding My Hands Out’ is about the primal urge to be held – it’s about reaching for comfort but grasping at shadows. I began writing this song just after my second baby was born, during a particularly vulnerable passage of time… and then I finished it during one of the Melbourne lockdowns (enough said!). Around that time I also ready the novel ‘Islands’ by Australian author Peggy Frew, and her characters June and Helen were right at the front of my mind during the songwriting process. Once I took the song into the studio and presented it to my producer Josh Barber, we had a lot of fun crafting the “snare” sample by layering vintage wind-up toys and half-broken wooden percussion.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
‘Holding My Hands Out’ is the latest single from my forthcoming third album, due in November. I’m really looking forward to sharing a few more singles in the lead up to the album later in the year!

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Yes! I’m celebrating the ‘Holding My Hands Out’ single release at the Wesley Anne on Sunday 10 July (matinee). Audiences can expect a warm, cosy celebration of music. It’s been almost 8 months since I performed live, because I’ve been so focused on recording the album. So now I’m really excited to perform the album, and bring the songs back to how they were written – on my guitar, keyboard, and live looping station. The Andromeda String Quartet are going to jump up and play a few songs, with some other surprise special guests, and indie-folk wunderkind Amelia Allen is opening.

How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
COVID has affected me more emotionally and psychologically than financially. I haven’t introduced anything specific to balance losses from missed events. I have tried to take care of my mental health and to go gentle on myself.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I’d love to do a collaboration with Jake Webb from Methyl Ethel.

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
I’d like to write some music for dance. I also was in loose conversations with a jewellery-maker a few months ago, about making some responsive pieces together! I love the idea of moving beyond my own practice and working with other artforms. But if we’re talking strictly music, I’d love to sing a duet with Weyes Blood. Or Father John Misty. Or both!

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Performing live is an electric experience – there’s nothing like it on earth. It’s a conversation between me and my guitar and a room full of people. It’s hyper-exciting; there’s always the element of creative danger, and there’s the instant feedback. You know if you’ve hit the mark or not; you can sense in the moment if you’re connecting with people. In terms of career highlights, re-orchestrating the entire Ziggy Stardust album for string quartet and voice, and then performing it at ACMI for the David Bowie exhibition was preeeeetty fun!

Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –
FAVOURITE:
Album – Metals by Feist
Artist – oh, come on, that’s impossible to answer!
Movie – E.T The Extra Terrestrial
Place to visit – The pines at the back of my Dad’s property in NSW
Venue to play – It’s not a venue, it’s a concert series, but I’d say MOTH (Music on the Hill).
Food – coffee
Drink – coffee
Person in History – my daughter, Kendra.
Tattoo – (If you don’t have one, what would you get?) I’d get the words “don’t panic” in very small, neat letters to the right of my inner bikini hairline.
