Interview with
GIRL AND GIRL
(20th December 2021)
Interview by Dave Bruce

How did the band come together? Is there someone who is a “driving force”, or do you all make decisions together?
Kai – Jayden and I started jamming in his garage at the end of grade 11, we then moved it to my garage, whereby aunty liss stumbled across us one afternoon. She jumped on this 20 yr old rusted kit, layed down a beat, and the rest is kind of history.
Aunty Liss – For me, I think it all started when Kai came to me and asked me to give him lessons on the drum kit. He practiced consistently, passionately and was determined to start a band. He asked how long it would take to be as good as me, I said keep practicing like you are and it will happen, and I added – why don’t you give guitar a go? He did and every time I saw him, he would have a guitar hanging from his neck. I think he had been jamming at school with Jayden for a while and then I had heard that they were starting a band. I stuck my head in the garage when I was over at his place one day, to see how they were going and jumped on drums to see what we could do with one of their songs. I’ve been playing with them ever since, not long after Jayden’s brother Coby joined.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Kai – I call it ‘desperate rock’, because for me, I feel like I’m bursting at the seams (especially live) to get these thoughts and feelings out of me. I like to think people resonate with the themes i explore in my lyrics, depression, love, sexual confusion etc etc, but also the severity and over dramatisation of it all.
Aunty Liss – I love the lyrics/songs that Kai is writing, they are often very personal, emotional, descriptive and often just so much fun. I think they are entertaining and relatable. We endeavour to create each song different from the next, our songs seem to make people want to dance, sing along.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Kai – Brisbane locals ‘Square’ are blowing my freaking mind at the moment, their music and their performances are explosive.
Coby – A lot of pitchfork performances have been fantastic – thee oh sees, parquet courts etc. Mac de Marco live performances always stand out to me, he’s never afraid to experiment and improvise on stage.
Aunty Liss – I was a massive Nirvana fan in my early 20’s and still feel inspired by Dave Grohl today. Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, New Christs, Magic Dirt, the Church, Phantastic Ferniture.
Your debut EP ‘A Typical Friday Night’ was released back in September, describing its origin and evolution.
Aunty Liss – We chose songs that we had been playing for a while, ones we enjoyed playing and felt resonated with the audience. The name of the EP was inspired by the songs “Shame it’s Not Now”, “Sex on the Internet” and “Misery Man”.
.
.
Is there any new music on the drawing board?
Kai – Yes! We’ve just received the final mixes for our second EP! It’s like five times better than the first one if I do say so myself. There’s not too much more I can say other than the release show is likely to be played in tuxedos.
Aunty Liss – Yes, always. Kai has songs pouring out of him, it seems to be like musical/ verbal diarrhea, so there’s plenty of songs for the band to work on. We have a few new ones almost ready to share at our live shows. We have also just recorded our second EP, which we can’t wait to share with everyone.
You’re playing The Mountain Goat Valley Crawl 2022, what are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Kai – Rat!Hammock !! + every other person on the line up, we’re so honoured to have been asked to join it!
Aunty Liss – Very excited to be amongst the line up for Mountain Goat Valley Crawl 2022. We will be giving our best on stage and maybe even have some of our new tunes ready by then.
How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
Aunty Liss – We’ve been incredibly lucky with COVID. Living in QLD we haven’t lost very much work at all and because we have been a band at the beginning of our career, our shows have been growing. We have concentrated on playing shows on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, we are looking forward to branching out to NSW and other states as the country begins to open up again.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Coby – Arcade Fire at at Glastonbury 2014 was huge, I would have loved to perform with them on that stage even if I was just playing the tambourine
Kai – I second Arcade Fire, Win Butler is a #god/ #musicalgenius, but also LCD Soundsystem, because James Murphy is also a #god.
Jayden – Cyndi Lauper, my mum’s a super big fan I would do it for her.
Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
Jayden – make it baby
Kai – I want to be able to live off my craft.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Jayden – Playing live is so surreal. It can be crazy the effect what you’re doing has on people which makes me only want to play more crazy and it goes sort of back and forth even with each other on stage.
Aunty Liss – I love performing with the boys, it’s particularly fabulous when the sound on stage is great, and the audience is obviously enjoying – dancing, singing along.
