Gold Lemonade consists of Caribbean-born trap vocalist Jvgg Spvrrow and French DJ/producer Lya Lewis, who met in Paris. They combine Jvgg’s laidback, tropical trap verses with Lya’s hard, electronic beat drops to create a more worldly, unique sound than anything else in the modern hip-hop landscape. The vibrant, colorful imagery and videos that accompany their fresh sound also set them squarely apart.

For any new fans, how did Gold Lemonade meet? What made you realise you’d make such a good duo?
Jvgg: Lya and I met in Paris at Arts Digital Studio while working on our solo projects. We started to collaborate together on works for other artists, which is how we began working with each other. We really liked the work that we were producing together, and we decided to combine both of our talents to create a unique sound.
Lya: I had just met Jackie Jackson in Las Vegas, and I needed lyrics for some tracks that I was producing for one of his artists. We crossed paths at the perfect time. We began to make music together and I really started to like the vibe that was created from fusing both of our styles together. The idea of the duo was then born, and the rest is history.

Who are you biggest musical influences?
Lya: My interests in music is very eclectic. I have listened to a broad range of sounds since I was young ranging from rock, pop, hip-hop, trip-hop, metal and jazz. Artists that have influenced me include Tina Turner, Super Tramp, Portishead, Radiohead, Joshua Redman, Tupac and Eminem. My mom was a big music lover and we listened to a lot of different music in my house. At the age of 17, I fell in love with electronic music after listening to artists including DJ Mehdi and Carte Blanche. I also fell in love with the EDM style by listening to DJs including Laidback Luke and Joachim Garraud. The Parisian nightlife was booming during this time, which allowed me to discover electronic music at the height of its existence.
Jvgg: I grew up in St. Maarten in the Caribbean where the music has a big influence on our culture. Reggae, soca, dance-hall and hip-hop music played a big role in our daily lives. If I have to select a few artists that have influenced me in my career it would be Sizzla, Richie Spice, Vybz Cartel, Bounty Killa, Lil’ Wayne and Tupac. You can hear my island influences in all of my music. A lot of people say I have a reggae flow in my vocals, confirming my Caribbean influence.

How would you describe your sound? What makes you unique?
Jvgg: We are fusing electronic music and hip-hop to develop a new wave. The intro of our tracks is almost always hip-hop with a distinct electronic drop in them. Like I said before, we have a lot of influences, resulting in none of our songs sounding alike.
Lya: We love to call our style urban electro- a true mix of urban vibe and powerful electronic drops. Hip-hop and electronic music have the biggest influence when it comes to music genres today. It was only logical that we fuse them into one genre.

Your new single “Drippin’ (feat. Lil Shakk)” is out now. Can you tell about the track and its inspiration? What do you think Lil Shakk adds to the track? How did that collaboration come about?
Jvgg: Lil Shakk is my blood related younger brother. He is only 15 and is a hip-hop artist and producer himself. He first sent me the track because he wanted my feedback, and we then fell in love with it and wanted to further develop it. I then laid my own vocals on the track, and we turned it into what it is today.
Lya: When Lil Shakk sent us the track, we were blown away. We knew we had to add some of our own flavor to it, and collaborate with him on this project. It’s really cool that we were able to work on this project with him. We also have another feature with him on the mixtape with our track titled “Sorry For The Noise”, and another one coming soon. We really love working with him as he has a great flow and great voice. He brings something fresh to each track that he features on.

You have very colourful and vibrant in you music video, including the new “Drippin” video. What draws you to this aesthetic?
Lya: Our track Drippin is really fun as it is both arrogant and playful. Our music videos really reflect the feeling that went into creating each of our tracks. Our style really shows in each of our videos, and we have had the pleasure of working with many directors that really get our vision including Well Done, Rhythmic Lab, Director SM and Seb Antoine.
Jvgg: Our Drippin video is really a party vibe. We try to create a storyline for each of our videos that really draws the viewer in. For this specific video, we curated an actual pool party at a villa in McDonald Ranch in Las Vegas. It was a really fun shoot.

Earlier this year you released your first full length album, ‘School of Hard Drops’. How does it feel for you to have the album out? What was it like to see the response?
Jvgg: It was a great feeling to see our year of hard work in the studio come to life. To be able to showcase 16 diverse tracks to our fans is truly the biggest feat for us yet. We are really happy with the results as we just passed one million views on YouTube, and over 500,000 streams on Spotify. This is only the beginning and we can’t wait to show you what we have in store.
Lya: Mixing hip-hop and EDM was a risk, because it gets people out of their comfort zone being a new genre. In the end, we feel blessed by the response that we’ve received. When people refer to our work as groundbreaking and unique, it really motivates us to work harder.

You’re a very multicultural duo with Caribbean Jvgg Spvrrow and French Lya Lewis. How do you think these merging cultures enhance your sound?
Lya: As I said before, I have surrounded myself with a lot of different genres of music. I pull influence from a lot of different directions, which has allowed me to push Jvgg to places he never thought he would go. With both of our influences, we have formed a complete sound.
Jvgg: My island influence really plays a key role in our music. My vocals have a distinct reggae flow, and when combined with a hip-hop and EDM track, it really provides something unique.

If you could tour with anyone, who would it be and why? (Dead or alive)
Jvgg: Travis Scott because he always has the crowd in the palm of his hand. His shows have a great energy with a lot of hype. It’s lit!
Lya: I would love to tour with Skrillex. I have looked up to him since he first launched. His style fits with our style, and he seems to be very humble.

What’s the next achievement you would like to take on in your career?
Lya: Our biggest accomplishment would be to tour the world. We are more than ready to do what we love, and meet people that have the same love for music as us. To perform alongside our inspirations and play large music festivals around the world would be a dream.
Jvgg: We can’t wait to showcase our project by touring the world. We also hope to collaborate with other artists by having them feature on some of our future tracks. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us.
